This is an ongoing thread for Scottish mumsnetters - or indeed non Scottish mumsnetters such as myself, to comment on ongoing covid matters pertinent to ourselves, in a hopefully not too partisan and friendly fashion.

Downwith Scotland has more deaths than England despite Glasgow have had 3 months of restrictions and everything being tighter than down south.
Soft play are open in England but not Scotland.
Not sure why NI getting extra couple of days to travel could be SG fault. Why didn't they ask for same dispensation for the Isles because they didn't want to they have to go a step further a little tighter.

Have you read the thread about suicides. People are having the life sucked out of them. But SG want to stop Christmas.

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/11/2020 17:48

They're all making an arse of it - we have some of the worst covid stats in the world. I would love to see the opposition parties in Scotland get their fingers out as the lack of strong opposition is not healthy

Pubs did not open before playgrounds. Playgrounds reopened on 29 June (I was there as soon as they did!). Pubs didn't open until July, and it was well into July before they opened indoors. And playgrounds haven't been closed again since then, when pubs obviously have been.

Bikingbear · 26/11/2020 18:01

Scotland definitely needs stronger opposition. Was disheartening that Labour rejected the Tory request to work together.

Anyway, I'm feeling fed up.
I was so full of hope for Christmas. While we could invite both families and be within the regs, neither families want to mix.
For various reasons I think mine trump his. But mine feel guilty at forcing ILs out. IL probably wouldn't give same consideration to mine.
DH quite fancies a no hassle Christmas without visitors.

And at that I'll bang my head off the wall or turn to thoughts of the family swab and 2m crackers (I'm sure my boys would use them as weapons)

Bytheloch · 26/11/2020 18:02

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

*Just a thought do you think Labour and Torys are just watching the figures and giving SNP enough rope to hang themselves??

Or is that too much to hope for?*

Well if they are, it's clearly an utterly idiotic approach (so quite likely in fact), since SNP approval is still overwhelmingly positive in spite of the Covid pandemic and associated measures.

What exactly are you hoping for from two completely hopeless parties with no discernible policy or direction with regard to Scotland other than 'no to a 2nd referendum'? Have you not noticed that the Tories are making an even bigger arse of this south of the border?

I see the latest wee echo-chamber gripe is the miniscule divergence from the 4 nations approach. Presumably the same in Wales, and the far larger discrepancy in NI is somehow also the 'fault' of the SNP.

This echo-chamber of gripes is actually a cheery place to be, unlike the chamber of doom where the SNP appear to be residing. Funnily enough, SNP approval ratings are high in that echo chamber too.

Maybe we need a separate thread away from here where we can all agree to disagree like grown ups?

Bikingbear · 26/11/2020 18:04

Thanks Bytheloch Smile

anon444877 · 26/11/2020 18:13

Yes this thread certainly cheers me up through some dark winter days. Whingeing about governments over-reaching themselves is an essential part of our democratic rights. China employs lots of people to monitor and control its social media, not an act to follow.

littlbrowndog · 26/11/2020 18:15

I like it here. There is humour , thoughts , laughing at the madness which is the tier system and the puir bonkerness that comes on every day from our esteemed leader

And the support

I read the suicide thread. So awful

You don’t have to read the echo chamber thread if you don’t want to

It’s not the law or a guideline

Bikingbear · 26/11/2020 18:16

Anon definitely not something we want to follow.

Yes this had been a cheery place to be. Glad to have found you ladies.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/11/2020 18:20

somebody failed to get the tone of this thread completely...

Anyway, was there any need for divergence at all? Surely the whole point was that the whole country was to get the same message and the same treatment to avoid confusion.

On a brighter note, i'm on hols for a couple of days, obviously can't go anywhere so I've done a bit of on-line shopping and picked up a fair bit of what I wanted. People will get something else other than booze from the supermarket :)

Bikingbear · 26/11/2020 18:25

Fab news, definitely something to be said for online shopping and it just appears at the door a few days later. That and being able to hang washing out have to be the biggest benefits of wfh

Perihelion · 26/11/2020 18:27

The restrictions that Glasgow needed earlier, weren't possible due to the omnishambles with the furlough scheme.
I wonder if the recent increase in death rate from Covid, in Scotland compared to England is also due to the the seasonality of the virus and the effect of being further North. Countries which were previously doing well at suppressing Covid, like Japan and South Korea are now seeing a rise.

titsbumfannythelot · 26/11/2020 18:27

Somebody needs a stiff Sturgin and tonic I see....

I do at least one washing a day, a definite benefit of wfh.

@FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping well I’m sorry but they did in my area!! Why would I be lying? Do you not think I was bloody desperate for them to open with a then 2 year old?! Blame Glasgow City Council/East Renfrewshire Council, whatever, but I’m not making this up.

Whereabouts are you, if you don’t mind me asking? I can confirm that the play areas in Queens Park and Maxwell Park (both Glasgow southside) were not open for quite some time after June 29th. Ditto Huntly Park and Muirend Pavilion (East Ren).

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/11/2020 18:32

Agree. We had a team video meeting the other day and someone's doorbell went and off he trotted to get his delivery and someone asked who else was waiting for a delivery and a sea of hands went up (including mine).

My problem was that no-one had any good ideas of what they would like but I gave some prompts and got results. Just DH to sort. Thinking of box set of Boardwalk Empire as it looks like something he'd enjoy and doesn't seem to be available to stream on Amazon or Netflix.

I've always done a fair bit on-line anyway as I'm not a big fan of shopping, our local offering is not that great and I work full time. My lovely neighbour graciously took in my parcels and I'd buy her a nice treat to say thank you.

And yes, my washing has never been more up to date. Pop on a load while my systems are loading and then hang it either mid morning if I get a break or at lunch.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 26/11/2020 18:37

@AgentCooper I'm in Edinburgh - my nearest play parks were definitely open before the local pubs.

I'm not saying you are lying, but if your local play parks weren't open then the fault for that doesn't lie at the feet of the Scottish Government, but at your local authority. So it's not correct to say that this Government chose to open pubs before play parks - that isn't the guidance they issued.

Bikingbear · 26/11/2020 18:40

The rest of my house is like a midden but the washing is done.
I even tried to hang stuff out today. It never dried thought. Although the drips fell of I suppose. Outdoor jackets that never spin that well hence the drips.

KatySun · 26/11/2020 18:41

I am a lurker on this thread and I quite like it. The lovely people here encouraged me to go to an outdoor event early in November when the clocks had just gone back and my mental health was suffering. It was all covid safe and I am glad we went as now in Tier 4.

I also think there is a point to what perihelion says about the climate. There is already higher morbidly and mortality in Glasgow - I think people have mentioned the Glasgow effect or maybe that was another thread - but even accounting for factors like poverty and unemployment, Glasgow still has higher levels of illness and mortality than other comparable cities in England and elsewhere.

Anyway, to improve my mental health I decided also to do a morning walk before I started work for the day when the DC have gone to school, rather than wait until I had got a lot of work out the way. So I am trying to keep that up.

I will go back to lurking now Smile

titsbumfannythelot · 26/11/2020 18:46

Hi @KatySun, you can't go back to lurking now!

Bikingbear · 26/11/2020 18:49

The issue with the parks might have been the annual safety checks. They would have had a back log as the safety check people would have been furloughed as non essential.

AgentCooper · 26/11/2020 18:53

@FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping you’re right. Mea culpa re the Government, sorry. I didn’t mean to lose my shit there, I’m just bloody tired as I know we all are.

Glasgow City Council and East Ren council are shite, though...

AgentCooper · 26/11/2020 18:55

We are really gubbed for vitamin D in Glasgow and there have been a number of good studies showing the importance of decent vit D levels in fighting off COVID. Possibly no worse than other parts of the west in lower tiers but add our other factors into the mix and boom Sad

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 26/11/2020 19:02

Fair play @AgentCooper - I was unnecessarily nippy with you about it!

I'm no ardent defender of the SG but there's plenty of stuff to complain about that they have done without getting into stuff they haven't!

Those months without play parks were so so tough with wee ones, especially for folk in flats with no gardens.

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 26/11/2020 19:02

I am not doing as much exercise as I used to (and the weight is creeping up!). I should walk more than I do but has anyone noticed how dark it is getting and so quickly too! Its also fucking baltic this week.

I really want and need my gym to reopen. I have disabilities including mental health problems and I'm not supposed to be going anywhere TBH but the gym was really helping me :(

polarisation · 26/11/2020 19:03

Well that's the SQA announced today that the visiting assessments for SQA music exams won't be happening in February. They've acknowledged that candidates whose instruments were wind/brass or voice are at a disadvantage, and have helpfully suggested that these pupils could learn a different instrument. So an advanced higher pupil can just pick a new instrument and learn it up to grade 5 level by April. Totally doable 🙄

This is in addition to the fact that the government guidance for practising and teaching wind/voice in schools genuinely suggested the use of gazebos. In winter. In Scotland. In a school playground.

Because learning isn't hard enough in a classroom with the windows open, let's all listen to wee Jimmy's trumpet lesson too!
