Moving to Fife - anti English?

strahan · 15/09/2020 14:06

I am thinking of moving to Fife, somewhere near the coast if possible. My family is from there. The trouble is, I sound English! we moved from Scotland when I was very young and I lost my Scottish accent. I have read about hostility to the English in Scotland. Should I be worried?
I have to say, I've only ever experienced friendliness when on holiday in Scotland. But I don't want to move somewhere where I'm not welcome.
Honest answers appreciated!

I moved home to Fife after many years away with English DH and two kids
Kids with English accents apart from one horrid wee toe rag no problems at school etc
DH in emergency services expected to get dogs abuse being an Englishman in Scotland but has had none regarding his country of birth
Having been away a long time I appreciate Fife so much more than when I was young it's beautiful friendly and full of characters!!

There’s more than one of us 😉

There is indeed.

Fife for the win!

Colleagues etc were shocked when DH and I voluntarily moved to Fife from Edinburgh, kept going on about house prices being sooooo much cheaper blah blah. I tried just to explain that actually, it's just a better place to live, but they don't want to accept it... Bursts their bubble Grin

In the 10+ years I’ve lived in Scotland the only time I ever experienced it was during the referendum. It was a single instance and during a divisive time though so hardly normal. Otherwise just general pisstaking that goes both ways. Most people don’t care.

VivaMiltonKeynes · 17/09/2020 21:33

You are never short of someone to talk to in Fife ! When I used to live abroad and used to stop at the toll booth on the Forth Road Bridge it was like coming home - a dry joke from the guy and the Kingdom awaiting me !😁

Cismyfatarse1 · 17/09/2020 21:39

I live in Fife and am English. It is a very welcoming place and many backgrounds for the UK and beyond.

Cismyfatarse1 · 17/09/2020 21:40

Bugger. From the UK and beyond.

I’m so excited to discover that some of my favourite Gc posters are Fifers.

Though I LOL at @JazzTheDog being a quince. I’m guessing autocorrect doesn’t do Doric.

Lol I thought I had corrected the autocorrects - missed that one!

@dementedma

Blimey, someone just mentioned Kelty and Cowdenbeath on Mumsnet! My life is complete. It'll be Cardenden and Lochore next. Fife accent is very strong and nothing like English!
How about Balingary and Croshill?

I'm not sure whether or not to be insulted at being told my FFife accent makes me sound English!

There are loads of English people who live and work in Fife and I've never seen any hostility towards them. There was a bit of anti-English feeling when I was a kit but not seen any for a long time.

strahan · 18/09/2020 12:10

Thanks again for your replies, fears allayed.

And it's been interesting to hear about the different accents and dialects - old St Andrews, Nordic, the Fife variations (plus some phrases familiar to me from my old dad).

I’m telling you, autocorrect hates Doric. It’s a conspiracy.

strahan · 18/09/2020 15:45

You're right Allison, I meant Doric !

I did three years in st-Andrews and didn’t encounter any antienglish sentiment.

FairfaxAikman · 18/09/2020 15:55

@jerometheturnipking

Ballingry?! Surely you mean buhlin’ry 😁

I can’t believe I’ve lived to see KDY being said on mumsnet 😂

I mind Chris Evans pronouncing that as Bah-lin-gr-eye on the radio a fair few years ago. Along with Lotch-jelee. Grin
umberellaonesie · 18/09/2020 16:00

@randomsabreuse

Fife accent is quite English sounding anyway, not very strong.

Plus if you had an accent you will get one again around people who speak with that accent - the same way you lost your accent in the first place.

We moved to Glasgow with posh English accents, zero issues.

😂 fifers can speak what appears to be an entirely different language, there are words used in Fife which don't exist anywhere else. I say this as a fifer who has been identified as a fifer by strangers in other countries by my accent alone.
LimitIsUp · 18/09/2020 17:04

Reading with interest because I want to live in Scotland - bloody love it!

womanaf · 18/09/2020 17:12

I’m a Fifer. When I moved to Glasgow several -decades- years ago, more than one weegie thought I was English on account of how ‘posh’ I sounded. I am not posh.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 18/09/2020 17:12

My accent is straight outta Henley despite being a Scot. I understand Doric, Shetlanders and all sorts of dialects in between (the brothers speaking Cromarty on the bbc website are good).

I still need to listen carefully when speaking to a true Fifer. 😂

I suspect there were problems in the past with accents - and I’ve been told to keep my trap shut in Tesco (the forge) when Celtic fans are in their way home from a match, but nobody has given me trouble. Closest I’ve had is an eye roll and a “no, where were you born?” At a hospital appointment. “Downstairs hen”. 😁

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 18/09/2020 17:17

Do you have any idea where in Fife you'll be moving to?

Disclaimer: I live there and my bit is very nice Grin

strahan · 18/09/2020 18:11

to IncludeWomenInTheSequel:

Don't know which area yet, research ongoing. We're looking for somewhere quiet (as in absence of noise pollution, flight paths, busy traffic etc...), near the coast, somewhere friendly and safe (preferably without anti-social behaviour problems), probably not a big city, but also not a tiny village. Close enough to some cultural / community activities, like singing in a choir. And within a day trip of a city like Edinburgh or Dundee. So, utopia!
Any suggestions? You say your bit is very nice, are you willing to share where it is?

@includewomeninthesequal before this username I had a whole series of usernames that were also snippets of lyrics from Hamilton Grin
