Moving to Fife - anti English?

strahan · 15/09/2020 14:06

I am thinking of moving to Fife, somewhere near the coast if possible. My family is from there. The trouble is, I sound English! we moved from Scotland when I was very young and I lost my Scottish accent. I have read about hostility to the English in Scotland. Should I be worried?
I have to say, I've only ever experienced friendliness when on holiday in Scotland. But I don't want to move somewhere where I'm not welcome.
Honest answers appreciated!

@ALLIS0N summed it up perfectly, Fifer here and totally agree.

VivaMiltonKeynes · 16/09/2020 20:27

@randomsabreuse

Fife accent is quite English sounding anyway, not very strong.

Plus if you had an accent you will get one again around people who speak with that accent - the same way you lost your accent in the first place.

We moved to Glasgow with posh English accents, zero issues.

You have a Glasgow accent now ?
VivaMiltonKeynes · 16/09/2020 20:28

@Sexnotgender

Sorry what? You think the fife accent is English sounding.

I was thinking the same! Obviously not met any true fifers.

Yeah try Kelty or Cowdenbeath Grin
Torvean32 · 16/09/2020 20:34

I'm from the highlands but i live in grampian. I still struggle with some Doric. Not anti English here. Anti Tory / SNP/ Brexit.

SacreBleeurgh · 16/09/2020 20:36

I’m inclined to agree with @Scotslassie1 - I think so much of the apparent ‘anti-English sentiment’ is fabricated by the media, but even more so on social media - and really doesn’t ring true in real life. I’m Scottish, husband is English and other than the odd bit of gentle ribbing amongst friends (no worse than I’ve ever received in England) he’s never had any issues whatsoever. Vocal Tories on the other hand... would probably be engaged in an intelligent conversation by anyone with the slightest political inclination, and quite frankly, at worst it would be an attempt to put them rightfully in their place....

Nixen · 16/09/2020 20:41

The Fife accent is quite English and not strong

😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don’t listen to that for a start!

dementedma · 16/09/2020 20:51

Blimey, someone just mentioned Kelty and Cowdenbeath on Mumsnet! My life is complete. It'll be Cardenden and Lochore next.
Fife accent is very strong and nothing like English!

ALLIS0N · 16/09/2020 20:54

I love that there are people on MN arguing about Fife accents Grin

Makes a change from bloody Br*it and Co*d.

I think we should spam this thread with posts to get it to the top of active convos to try to lure in some of the English 😉

Scotslassie1 · 16/09/2020 20:59

Love the name Sacre! My dad's on the board of a company and a new director from down South thought that proclaiming the Tories should be in power in Scotland too/ Douglas Ross should be FM would help him catch favour with the others!

Needless to say, he was politely but firmly told otherwise..

Grin My Gran's sister lived in Cardenden !
SacreBleeurgh · 17/09/2020 09:59

Thanks @Scotslassie1! And that story about the director is bringing me out in a cold sweat at just the thought of how awkward that moment must have been for all involved 😱

Elephantscantfly · 17/09/2020 18:13

Dunfermline for me 😆, lots of friends in Cowdenbeath, kelts an Kirkcaldy!

dementedma · 17/09/2020 20:50

I am staggered, and delighted to see others from darkest Fife and places most of MN will never heard of! Ballingry, Kelty, Cardenden, Lochore,Lochelly, Crossgates....anyone from Hill o Beath?

Sexnotgender · 17/09/2020 20:52

I’m in leafy Kirkcaldy.

SBTLove · 17/09/2020 20:52

Anti English in Scotland? where did you read that? Daily Mail 🙄 Utter shite, we welcome everyone and anyone, none of your ‘England First’ version here.

DontBelongHere · 17/09/2020 20:56

I'm free up NE Fife so have the 'English' version of the Fife accent. I'm now living in the Dunfermline area so surrounded by the actual Fife accent... ShockGrin My son has started dropping his ts in the middle of water and butter, so I'm afraid it's off to Dollar for him, STAT.

Anyway, welcome to ye hen, and yer bairns, they're affy braw.

I'm free up = I grew up

DontBelongHere · 17/09/2020 20:59

@Sexnotgender I'm very excited to see a GC mumsnetter from KDY. You're the whole package Halo

jerometheturnipking · 17/09/2020 21:02

Ballingry?! Surely you mean buhlin’ry 😁

I can’t believe I’ve lived to see KDY being said on mumsnet 😂

ApolloandDaphne · 17/09/2020 21:03

I am a fifer living in St Andrews. There are many English people living here and I have been nice to them all. Some of them are even good friends!

Totickleamockingbird · 17/09/2020 21:07

Wow OP. Fife is so beautiful.

There’s more than one of us😉

smooshedflowers · 17/09/2020 21:15

You'll always get some idiots but most people are fine and not anti-english football and political choices aside! I can only think of one person I know who would be hostile to an english person and he's a total whalloper with no pals!

JazzTheDog · 17/09/2020 21:15

I'm a born and bred Aberdeenshire teuchter quince but spent many years in Glenrothes when I met DH. DS2 has a queer hybrid Doric/Fife accent and regularly mixes his 'oright neebur'with his 'aye aye min'!

I used to be social worker and those towns and villages were all on my patch, I met some of the nicest people living there (along with some not so nice). I really miss it. I grew up in Glenrothes fwiw!
