Scottish schools opening

I was ready for schools opening, but this new research has given me pause for thought. I think this came out after Sturgeon's decision. What do you all think?

www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/07/31/georgia-children-covid-outbreak/#click=t.co/Y9gSG9zENz

Quote from the article:

"A new report suggests that children of all ages are susceptible to coronavirus infection and may also spread it to others — a finding likely to intensify an already fraught discussion about the risks of sending children back to school this fall.

The analysis, released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, details an outbreak at a sleep-away camp in Georgia last month in which 260 children and staffers — more than three-quarters of the 344 tested — contracted the virus less than a week after spending time together in close quarters. The children had a median age of 12. The camp had required all 597 campers and staff members to provide documentation that they had tested negative for the virus before coming. Staff were required to wear masks, but children were not."

I think the govt have successfully terrified everyone and now having to backtrack in order to let society reopen. Surely there is a risk of serious illness or death from any virus - chickenpox etc or even a cut knee could lead to sepsis! Yet we've got half of the school running for tests because a 5 year old has a snotty noseHmm it is honestly crazy.

BottomOfMyPencilCase · 22/08/2020 12:46

we've got half of the school running for tests because a 5 year old has a snotty nose Really? Because across our family between siblings being teachers and a lot of us having DCs, we're in about 20 schools and none of them have had half the school running for tests because a 5-yr-old has a snotty nose.
I also don't agree that the government 'terrified' everyone. The pandemic did. And I understand the human condition of wanting to pretend everything is normal but pretending won't stop cases.

Lidlfix · 22/08/2020 12:51

That's your view Boyo, I respect that. Are you the one sitting in a small poorly ventilated room with 30 of those snotty 5 year olds? I am delighted that parents are not self diagnosing common colds and taking their kids for test . Which despite the kids don't get it, kids don't spread it are coming back positive for some. If people are terrified it's maybe because they contracted the virus or lost someone to it.

I only know one person who has had the test throughout the pandemic. Just one.

Totally disagree - in govt documents from March it is clearly stated that they needed to keep the public in fear, though the media etc, in order to ensure compliance with the lockdown.

Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 12:56

So did I, chocface, and they were positive. But since the schools went back one week ago I could list at least 15 people who have been for tests due to colds, and they were all negative.

MumofHunter · 22/08/2020 13:05

Schools have had outbreaks prior to lockdown. I know one near me, one teacher who used to do 10ks is still very much affected and in poor health. This is not the chickenpox. Sad you seem angry that people are taking care of themselves and each other by getting tested. Everyone knows a snotty nose is not a symptom .

Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 13:13

Not angry at all - just think this is all seriously OTT. And where does it end, what if there is never a vaccine, do you propose kids go to school in masks forever?

Lidlfix · 22/08/2020 13:28

Well you are fortunate. We lost a family member and DH one of his staff. Neither elderly or suffering from pre existing conditions. Dh's team, he didn't get it, were decimated early April (they were tested due to the sector) and some of them just a bad cold others are still not back to their running, cycling and general fitness. So young people with above average fitness badly impacted on. School I teach in had several established cases and some suspected ones (community testing was abandoned at that point) prior to closing.

A government doesn't terrify me, my knowledge of real people does that rather well without them.

prettybird · 22/08/2020 14:34

My best friend's FIL died of it (in Wales). Another friend and her dh both got it via her boss who got it from a visit to London He ended up in hospital in intensive care as he'd recently had half a lung removed due to cancer - but thankfully is really fit (think - Ironman type fit Grin) which helped him recover. Another friend who is an ICU nurse tested positive and had to self-isolate for 2 weeks (fortunately she didn't feel too bad while she had it).

Be thankful you don't know anyone who's had it badly and/or lost loved ones.

chocciechocface · 22/08/2020 14:47

A government doesn't terrify me, my knowledge of real people does that rather well without them.

Totally feel the same. I was completely fine throughout lockdown. Having to share space with selfish idiots, who believe in junk science and conspiracy theories, scares the hell out of me.

OP posts:
Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 14:51

I hope that's not directed at me, @chocciechocface
We all have different perceptions of this, and that is ok. Nowhere did I say I wasn't following the rules, just that I think they are OTT.

chocciechocface · 22/08/2020 14:56

It wasn't specifically directed at you. Unless you do believe in junk science etc.

But I note that you haven't really addressed the question of how people, who are in a risk group, should feel or behave.

OP posts:
Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 14:58

What do you want me to address exactly?

chocciechocface · 22/08/2020 15:04

Apologies - I had you mixed up with mindatwork. I asked this question earlier, in relation to all the comments about fear and things being OTT etc.

Do you think that someone with an identified underlying condition should NOT be worried at all? Do you think they should carry on as normal, even if they have been warned that that might mean serious illness or death?

OP posts:
Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 15:05

I stated my point in response to your original post - I think kids in masks is OTT and helping to create a climate of fear. I'm not interested in getting into a fight. We both clearly have different points of view on the topic, both equally valid.

walksen · 22/08/2020 15:08

It is so dismissive to say ah well we shouldn't be scared of covid because you could die from a cut or chickenpox.

If you are healthy and under 40 this may well be true but once you hit 40 catching covid doubles your chance of death in the next year (from all causes including heart attacks cancer murder accidents sepsis chickenpox getting hit by a meteorite from space etc!) and it gets worse as you get older.

This is before factoring in underlying conditions or that you might live with someone much more susceptible, or the uncertainty involved in knowing some people hav..e long term recoveries although the probability of this is unclear.

It's pretty arrogant to imply that people being cautious are shit scared when lets be honest world leaders ( who are not all irrational) with access to expert advice from the best minds in the field tell people worldwide to get tests with any temperature but you know better!

Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 15:13

That is total hysteria. As I said before, the govt intentionally created a culture of fear in order to enforce the lockdown. It is officially documented. In the news the other day it said that Covid wasn't even one of the top ten causes of deaths in Wales this year, yet now the whole entire world seems to revolve around the threat of Covid.

walksen · 22/08/2020 15:14

What part is hysterical?

chocciechocface · 22/08/2020 15:18

As I said before, the govt intentionally created a culture of fear in order to enforce the lockdown.

Why would they want the lockdown?

The fact you don't have a response to that is quite telling.

OP posts:
Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 15:19

How can you know Covid doubles your chances of death within the next year when it hasn't even been officially around for a year?

walksen · 22/08/2020 15:26

Umm research?

You can compare ons age related mortality stats with age related case mortality estimates from the millions of casess studies done around the world. You might be right that the figure could be an underestimate because these case mortality figures tend to be based on periods less than a year and so will ignore people who longer for months with the severe damage caused e.g Kate garraways's husband.

How do you know the risk is comparable to getting sepsis from a cut?

Boyo7 · 22/08/2020 15:32

About 48k people die of sepsis each year in UK.
If we lowered the speed limit by 10mph several thousand lives would be saved.
If we banned alcohol completely several thousand lives would be saved.
So where does it stop? Why Covid, why is it currently the only important threat?

MumofHunter · 22/08/2020 15:40

Where have you been the last five months?! Ffs. Does sepsis spread like wildfire, potentially killing whole families if one person has it? No. You're either ignorant or stupid.
