Scottish schools opening

I was ready for schools opening, but this new research has given me pause for thought. I think this came out after Sturgeon's decision. What do you all think?

www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/07/31/georgia-children-covid-outbreak/#click=t.co/Y9gSG9zENz

Quote from the article:

"A new report suggests that children of all ages are susceptible to coronavirus infection and may also spread it to others — a finding likely to intensify an already fraught discussion about the risks of sending children back to school this fall.

The analysis, released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, details an outbreak at a sleep-away camp in Georgia last month in which 260 children and staffers — more than three-quarters of the 344 tested — contracted the virus less than a week after spending time together in close quarters. The children had a median age of 12. The camp had required all 597 campers and staff members to provide documentation that they had tested negative for the virus before coming. Staff were required to wear masks, but children were not."

I have no words ... 🙄

Lidlfix · 26/08/2020 16:53

I would have no problem getting my temperature scanned daily and swabbed regularly . If it keeps me and my pupils and my family reassured it's a good thing. My DD would also be fine with a temperature scan as some of her favourite haunts to this .

Were they the sort who think teachers are chasing the weans with 2m cotton buds while they run screaming "I do not consent"?

chocciechocface · 26/08/2020 17:26

They're the type that object to masks in absolutely all everyday scenarios and were vehemently opposed to any SD in schools.

@Lidlfix have you had the result of your test yet?

prettybird · 26/08/2020 18:52

I have to have my temperature checked before rugby training (only one-handed touch allowed at the moment), which I started back at on Monday (I'm nuts, joining women's rugby training in my very late 50s Shock).

Temperature was 35C Wink

We were told that we were to shut the windows if the classroom is too cold so that we can ensure that non-uniform jackets etc are taken off, prioritising uniform rules over safety. Apparently this is because in the guidance it’s only “recommended” that windows be kept open. I’m not particularly happy about that decision.

waitforitwaitforit · 26/08/2020 19:51

That's insane. But reminds me that we were supposed to have all the doors propped open to allow ventilation in the corridors, but because they're fire doors they won't be. So fire is a bigger danger than covid.

Mistressiggi · 26/08/2020 20:48

@MurrayTheDemonicTalkingSkull - Union. That isn't on at all.

Will parents be told windows are going to be closed? That's the sort of information I'd like to have.

That's ridiculous.

No temp checking at our school. I guess it's quite a time consuming thing to do each day; certainly at my work they discussed it and realised they'd essentially have to employ someone to do it!

BottomOfMyPencilCase · 26/08/2020 23:03

They'd probably be cheaper buying a temperature scanner than employing someone ...

Callisto1 · 26/08/2020 23:13

In our school temperature checking at the gate would be quite tricky since we're supposed to drop off the child just outside the entry to playground and then leave asap. I barely see that DC are safely inside. If we had to wait for temp check you'd soon have a pileup of parents since there is not much space. Maybe if there were several people checking it could work.
I would be much keener on proper Covid testing, since temperature checks aren't that reliable. Think some places take mass saliva samples and then if it's positive you know one of the group has it. I think that would be a really good idea if it's possible.

I’m on it. Grin

Callisto1 · 26/08/2020 23:16

Oh and I just read about a 12 min Covid test we're supposed to get. Maybe then if a child looks ill they could be tested directly st school.

MurrayTheDemonicTalkingSkull · 26/08/2020 23:18

@chocciechocface I’m not sure if parents have been told this. Often they get more information than we do!

Gosh this would be amazing.

We only take temps if we are concerned that a child is running a temp. We're not daily checking.

Windows are open. We have 2 doors into P1 so we have one open at a time as sometimes one of the doors lead to a breakout space so it's to give the child in there privacy.

Nursery, we're outdoors in all weathers.

BottomOfMyPencilCase · 27/08/2020 10:37

That 12 min Covid test sounds interesting and it's brilliant that the strips are being manufactured in Scotland.

lookingforamindatwork · 27/08/2020 12:57

So over 17,000 children tested recently, so parents are obviously worried.

DD is one of those pupils although her test results STILL haven't come back yet!

Dinnafashyersel · 27/08/2020 14:19

17,000 tested last week but only 49 positive. This was only 2 more child positives than when there was much smaller scale targeted testing the previous week.

A lot of people are anxious or being prompted to seek a test but no indication that there is more Covid about. In fact somewhat reassuring that targeted testing looks to be picking up vast majority of actual cases.

waitforitwaitforit · 27/08/2020 15:25

Loads of unnecessary tests, clearly, so people who genuinely need them aren't getting through because the little darlings' annual snotty noses are now covid. Pandemic or not, can people not exercise some common sense?

Tearsforyears · 27/08/2020 15:34

My child had a cold since starting school. Snotty nose then fever now just snotty nose. According to guidelines she needed a test. I think it’s not necessarily parents not using common sense - more because fever is common in kids even for minor things like cold?

randomsabreuse · 27/08/2020 15:53

I had a test because I had a temperature with Appendicitis. DC1 gets temperatures with ear infections. Some young children spike temperatures with minor colds...

Proves there's lots of not Covid colds around!

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 27/08/2020 16:31

A full quarter of the kids in our school were off today, mainly colds and sore throats. A quarter!

CaptainMerica · 27/08/2020 16:38

Yeah, common sense is not an effective covid detector. Some kids get a temp or cough with every cold.

I would much rather write it off as "just a cold" than get my DC tested. But that is how covid will start spreading out of control again.

I don't think people are necessarily worried, I think most will just be reluctantly following the rules.

I hope the government have planned for this level of testing through winter.
