From the random box of covid restrictions we now get....

Facemasks in shops.

I mean really, what is the point now? If they were useful then the time when they were useful was months ago.

Surely the chance of catching covid in a shop is minute, the chance of then being ill is more minute and the chance of dying is vastly remote.

It just feels like it another thing to say just to keep control? I have no problem doing things that make sense and protect others, but really? Public transport where you may be in the vicinity of someone for longer seems fair enough but shops doesn't make sense.

IME so far, having a mask dangling from your neck without even being worn seems to give people carte blanche to stand less than a foot away from others.

I've just nipped to the coop

I put a mask on. The lad serving me had his dangling from one ear. He said he didn't like it.

Plus my cheapo mask burst the elastic.

Found this old post of mine from last year. Ive just copied and pasted it elsewhere on another thread because someone brought up women being dunked in water in ye olden days. But reading this post back now its quite chilling.

HelenaDove Mon 01-Apr-19 18:32:16
"Ive just finished reading Witchfinders A Seventeenth Century English Tragedy.

The "witches" tried and hanged were not all women. Some were men.

One accused was an eight year old boy.

What most of them had in common was that they were poor. Yes poor. A lot of them were widows who needed what was known then as parish money to live. Elizabeth Clarke was an 84 year old one legged widow who was hanged. Many more were elderly. Neighbour turned against neighbour. Many resented their rates and parish money going to help these "wretches"

See any parallels? Because i do.

At the end of the book (although he does allude to it throughout) the author mentions how lack of liberty and welfare and political and economic uncertainty leads to this kind of climate.

We wouldnt get people persecuted for practising witchcraft now (although this still goes on in parts of the developing world) but we still get people persecuted for being poor/disabled etc.
Matthew Hopkins John Stearne and Sir Harbottle Grimston etc are long dead But some of their ideals are still very much alive.

There are parallels and its chilling"

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 01:51

The bit when i ask about seeing parallels is from last year. That whole section is. I havent added it on now.

"Neighbour turned against neighbour" They would report someone for being a witch. Now its covert filming of people on buses.

how lack of liberty and welfare and political and economic uncertainty leads to this kind of climate

We are seeing the same thing play out for a different reason.

pigoons · 11/07/2020 11:52

Need to rant - sorry

Just back from supermarket. Most people wearing masks but quite a few with their noses uncovered (including most staff) or hanging off one ear. No pretence of adherence to SD distancing at all.

I had huge problems with my disposable mask. Despite nose wire glasses constantly steaming up , ears rubbed raw because of elastic and worst of all mask just felt too big and kept working its way down my nose. All resulting in me touching my face constantly.

This is the third mask I've tried. One is cloth with ties and nose wire - same problem with steaming up and ties slipping down so mask works down nose. The other is cloth with elastic nose wire. Same problems. I am sick of wasting money on things that don't do they job they are intended for

I will avoid shops as much as possible now. NS has taken my one pleasure away from me. Going to supermarket and choosing a few nice things ... and for what? Probably poorer infection control measures based on what I witnesses. Off paying my annual subscription to Amazon instead

chrislilleyswig · 11/07/2020 12:40

I know what you mean Pigoon. It's as if everyone's forgotten what we should do because masks. Masks will fix everything

I'll avoid shops now as much as possible

username2020 · 11/07/2020 13:42

DH went to argos today to pick up new ironing board cause ours broke and says it was horrible. It was click and collect. You had to stand at a distance and wait for someone behind a screen with a mask on to shout out your order. DH said that was when he finally understood just how impossible that would be for me as a deaf lip reader.

I am trying to book an online grocery shop and fuck me, prices have really gone up and the delivery charge is ridiculous too.

I might try some farmers markets instead. Alternatively does anyone know of any farm shops that deliver in the greater glasgow area?

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 14:48

Really sorry for your experience @username2020.

There are these folks who might might have one near you?

www.thegreatbritishfoodhub.com/ but it is expensive buying from the farmers markets etc. We've had some lovely food but can't afford to do a shop regularly, just when we want some nice meat etc.

there are quite a lot of on-line butchers who deliver (some by post) which might work out better.

It's stuff like this that is really annoying me. What could have been said is that there is increasing information which suggests that masks are effective in stopping the spread of Covid-19. Whilst there is no evidence to show that shopping has been a cause of infections so far and numbers are lowering, we want to move from recommending face coverings to expecting that those who can wear coverings do so whilst shopping. It's appreciated that not everyone is able to wear a face covering for many reasons. Please remember to keep your distance whether you are or are not wearing a mask.

I'm annoyed regardless as everyone knows I'm a thrawn cow, but that at least would take it a step away from "mandatory unless..." which is the problem that posters here are encountering.

A FB friend reposted a post from Autism explaining why they might find mask wearing difficult, I commented that this also applies to others including victims or abuse or domestic violence...and nothing. Feel like I'm on the battlefield by myself with nothing but a battered bugle :)

Okay so my Morrisons order is due tonight. Just had an email to confirm that 10 items are unavailable - some of those are part of offers, so I needed two items to get the offer and they can only supply one. They've added substitutes for 5 of the items (only one of the ones involved in an offer and not sure the substitute given is in the offer [confused[) None of those items are things that I want though on the face of it they seem suitable. One of them is something that specifically needs to go with another i.e. no sausages when I've ordered in the veg etc to make a sausage casserole...

Not impressed, nothing on their website to say how the offer issue is managed and seems to be saying that they are not always able to take back substitutions...

So, not looking great really is it.

OP posts:
OOAOML · 11/07/2020 15:45

Not sure how Morrisons do it but we had an Asda order where half of an offer was unavailable and they reduced the price on the other item. Not had many deliveries as it's been hard to get slots but planning to try and do another for heavy stuff (no car so have to carry the shopping home).

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 16:30

Sainsburys have generally been fine in the past but as I say, i've not used them since lockdown. I'm just a bit frustrated that Morrisons couldn't put in other sausages, I mean they must have had other sausages right?

A friend once got a delivery (think Asda) and they didn't give her bread and no substitute - it was just a bog standard white sliced she was looking for and the delivery driver was as annoyed as she was when she pointed out that surely they had some bread in the entire Asda/warehouse. The guy even said "if i'd noticed that hen, i'd have grabbed a loaf on my way out" :o So, she had to dig in the freezer to find stuff for the kids packed lunches as it was a late evening delivery.

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 17:51

Get a load of this. One rule for men and another for women.

OOAOML · 11/07/2020 17:54

Are Morrisons deliveries from warehouses? Vague memory of reading that. You'd expect them to have better stock control if so. Not getting bread would be hard - I'm finding it hard to believe how much milk and bread we seem to need these days. We were mainly having packed lunches before but still seem to need to buy it more often.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 18:15

I think it must be from a warehouse but click and collect is maybe from the store? When I tried to change to click and collect there were just as many unavailable items but it seemed to be different things such as fruit and veg that were missing.

We go through around 5 or 6 pints of milk a day and the best part of a loaf - I always feel like I am stockpiling so tend to only by 4, 4 pint cartons at a time but that barely lasts 3 days.

Interesting @HelenaDove. I think a lot just doing what they like anyway.

OP posts:
Willow2017 · 11/07/2020 18:26

At my Morrisons all deliveries and click and collect are done in store. Special vulnerable shopping is done to order in store too. Not the generic rubbish limited one online.

No, my elderly father had an Angina attack today because the store was too hot and he couldn't breathe through his mask. It should never be compulsory to wear one

So missing items are all still available to add to an on-line order on the website yet I have no soda crystals, no tartare sauce though they have a choice of 3 online (i am getting, fish , chips and peas though) apparently no substitute for sausages, I ordered strips of plasters and they've given me normal plasters which is no use, okay the other way round but no use to me, i ordered sandwich bags and they've given me large freezer bags, substituted a salad bag for another but it contains something we don't like, swapped smoothie wouldn't be first choice but is okay, no idea why they wouldn't just me two of the other one I ordered and they've swapped thin ham I ordered with thick which should be fine. last 2 were tins of soup and they've given same flavour but different brand. It's not for me so don't really care :o

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 18:45

I'm not good with twitter Helena but that is awful. Comment from someone saying I thought if you had respiratory problems you don't have to wear one but that brings us back to the medical point in that he didn't have respiratory problems, he had a heart condition so I guess doesn't fit the criteria to not wear one. and no doubt could have felt under pressure (either his own or others) to wear one.

OP posts:
HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 18:54

Exactly DH has the same heart spray because he has ischemic heart disease as well as COPD.

I hate to predict this but someone is going to end up seriously ill because of this before long.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 19:01

Sorry to hear that Helena, i've seen quite a bit about how masks are here to stay long term and how we will all just get used to wearing them. Not that we should believe everything we read but I can totally see this happening, be easy enough to come up with stats to fit the narrative.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 20:40

Delivery turned up at 8pm on the button - except my slot was 9-10 :)

Not complaining it was early though. Everything arrived, neither he or I could find the substitutes we wanted to return but he took off the price of the plasters and we called it quits. Tried to give us a tray of stuff that wasn't ours, all delivered in bags - the soft fruit isn't necessarily what I would pick if I was picking and we have a broken egg and a crushed plum but overall not too bad. :)

OP posts:
YonBonnieBanks · 11/07/2020 22:16

That's good to hear. I might give morrisons a go myself then.

Back on the face mask issue.

Once everyone is back at work, that's when it will become even more difficult and people will lose patience with it. Trying to get on a train with too few carriages and standing room only is difficult enough without now having social distancing and mask wearing on top of that.

Then everyone going for greggs lunches with masks on. No thanks.

I think it will all backfire spectacularly. People will just avoid trains and shops and the economy / job losses will be worse not better.

NS is desperately trying to make us forget about the care home crisis and everything else by showing us (too late) how caring she is and how protective she is.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/07/2020 22:23

A bus driver in France got beaten to death for trying to enforce mask wearing, it's shocking and despite me saying i'm not a fan and will be avoiding shops (public transport isn't an issue for me), I don't advocate even talking back to staff who are just trying to do their job.

OP posts:
Dinosauratemydaffodils · 11/07/2020 22:28

Dh said Sainsburys seemed to be checking for masks/challenging people without (an observation as he was wearing) but only on the door as inside loads of people had them on their chins and had forgotten what 2m looks like.

Mascotte · 11/07/2020 22:29

@WaxOnFeckOff I don't blame staff at all, I blame government
