We are considering a move to the Inverness area from the West Midlands. Obviously a big decision, and one we have been thinking about for sometime. The children are of an age now where it is now or never, my DH is from Ayrshire so although we will have family in Scotland they will lot be near by. Is there plenty for teens to do in the area? How about High Schools? We have visited the area often and obviously enjoy it then, I'm really just trying to find out experiences of others moving there, and the experience if teens living in the area. Many thanks in advance.

I live in Inverness and have done for years. I love it and have lots of friends and (prior to lockdown) a good social life. The high schools are good though catchment areas can be strict. I have 3 children and they like it here.

Activity wise I doubt there is as much to do as where you live at the moment. We have lovely areas to walk, it’s fairly safe, nightlife for over 18s though it’s not as good as bigger cities. There is also a bowling place, ice rink, cinema etc. Please be aware though that Scotland’s schools are not going back in full time from August or for the foreseeable future. Our kids are all going to be on a part time blended learning system from home. The exact details have not been advised as of yet but it looks like our kids will not be in school more than half the week. None of our leisure activities are open yet either.

Inverness itself in general is nice but some areas are better than others. Public transport is not fantastic either so it’s maybe worth factoring that in when looking at areas to live in.

I wouldn't say there's plenty for teens to do but some activities yes, if you're okay ferrying them around. I'd go for Inshes area or Culloden. Just be aware most of Inverness is big housing estates. I would stay clear of the High School. The proximity to Aviemore/ Cairngorns is a big plus point to living in Inverness!

Fortrose High school is very good but quite rural. Have you looked at Nairn? Beautiful houses, beach, nice local restaurants and 15 mins from Inverness. Inverness has shops . Cinema, places to eat for preteens. I think the high school in Nairn is ok. Aside from gordonstoun there are no private schools so do your research into education.
