Moving to Aberdeen, Scotland

Hi, my husband and I have been thinking about moving to Scotland for a while now. That's where he is from. We've been living in London for over 10 years. We are just not sure if it is the best for our future. I love Scotland and I can see myself there, but he is the one who is not sure. We have a house that we own in London and it's all very scary. Any suggestions? Similar experiences or anything to help? X

What age is/are your kid(s)? What are your interests? You mention Aberdeen in the title but not in the actual post - are you thinking of it because that's where your dh is from? Are you set on there? What sort of fields do your dh and you work in and are you confident you could get jobs?

Lots of questions but Scotland is a big place and there are lots of options. Smile

Thank you for this. I was indeed a little vague. My husband is from Aberdeen. He works in the drinks industry and I am in legal marketing. We have family and friends in Aberdeen and go there at least twice a year. We love when we are there. I find it refreshing. It's nice to think we could have a calmer lifestyle and maybe no mortgage. But adapting to a complete new lifestyle can be scary. We just don't know if this is the right thing to do. We have a 2 year old. X

I think anywhere feels refreshing when you are in a break.

But with London money you will get a great lifestyle up north

The lifestyle needn’t be THAT much different! Jobs, house and schools are the key elements. You should be quids in on housing with a London property to sell. Fewer jobs but there are jobs there. Why not rent for a bit?

Thank you so much. Smile

I’d be wary of buying in Aberdeen just now, I think house prices are going to sink with the oil price being so low and with little positive news on the horizon. Having lived through a couple of boom and bust cycles this one is definitely different, big employers are cutting back to the bone, not helped by the roll out of IR35, and Aberdeen really is a one horse town.

If you want to try it then I would rent for a while and see how things lie.
