Just naw

I am Scottish, lived my whole life in Scotland. As a social worker I have seen many weird children's names. I have never heard this name. I think your DH has made to up.

AmIthechristmasfairy · 16/01/2020 23:40

I'm another who has never heard of it and who also wouldn't pronounce it as Zachary.

Who told your partner this was the Scottish spelling of the name?

Lyricallie · 16/01/2020 23:41

Highlands here and originally from central belt. Never heard or seen it.

thaegumathteth · 16/01/2020 23:53

Never heard of it. Both my kids have Gaelic names and I'm pretty certain we trudged through every Gaelic name going when we were deciding what to call them

AngelaScandal · 16/01/2020 23:59

Reading it with my Irish (Gaelic) head on it looks like it would be pronounced ’S-goy-ra’. Never, ever seen a name like that before.

PrimalLass · 17/01/2020 00:04

No. Don't do it.

tabulahrasa · 17/01/2020 00:40

It’s not the Gaelic version of Zachary that’s Sachairi... someone somewhere just decided the anglicised version of it should be Zachary, because there isn’t really an anglicised version of it...

Mostly because it’s really rare, family specific and nobody is entirely sure if it’s originally Norse or not.

MorrisZapp · 17/01/2020 00:54

That's not a Scottish name. Currently, there are no uk residents on the voters roll called Sgaire.

TheTigersBride · 17/01/2020 01:09

I'm absolutely sure that name is not the Gaelic for Zachary or even a name for that matter.

thetrinityisshite · 17/01/2020 10:54

I've lived and worked all over Scotland as a children and family social worker. Never ever heard of this name.

Mrsjayy · 17/01/2020 11:02

Is it maybe a scandanavian/viking name I know i know straw clutching but maybe there is little Sgaire's (not Zachary) running around Orkney ☺

Mummyeyes · 17/01/2020 15:51

It's not made up. It is historically the form used for Zachary. Sgáire. With an accent on the a. There are various places with the name and a song Calum Sgáire. Probably in a Bible but I don't have a Scots Gaelic one to hand.

The OP has wandered off mind.

prettybird · 17/01/2020 16:10

I think she probably got frightened off by everyone saying that they'd never heard of it. Wink

I think that the original question in the title - is it a common name in Scotland? - has been answered with a resounding No Grin

Chemenger · 17/01/2020 16:35

What intrigues me is why anyone who has no immediate access to the answer to whether this is a common name in Scotland, for example by being Scottish, living there or having Scottish family , would want to use the name? A name that is impossible to guess the pronunciation of if only seen written and impossible to spell if only heard unless you speak Gaelic (and maybe not even then).

Huntlybyelection · 17/01/2020 16:38

But is it really gaelic for Zachary or is it a gaelic word that possibly sounds a bit like Zachary?

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 17/01/2020 16:38

Sorry op I've never heard of it either! I would have no idea how to pronounce it either.

Mrsjayy · 17/01/2020 16:39

It makesthe name edgy or something Wink

Willow2017 · 17/01/2020 16:40

It's not the Scottish spelling it's the Gaelic spelling of a name and pronunciation which is different. Not all Scots speak Gaelic. A relatively low % of the population in specific areas only do.
Do you have connections with the Highlands and islands at all?

Nobody will have a clue how to say it nor spell it your poor kid will have a lifetime of explaining it!

Lordfrontpaw · 17/01/2020 16:53

So it’s not spells or pronounced ‘Zachary’ then? May as well just call him Fred then.

IM0GEN · 17/01/2020 17:41

Poor kid living in London with that for a name.

Are you sure your partner isn’t pulling your leg OP?

Groovee · 17/01/2020 21:43

Never heard of it. Been working with children for 26 years.

Chemenger · 18/01/2020 07:28

28 years teaching engineering in a Scottish university, I’ve seen every Scottish boys name there is , including all the variations of Rhuiridh and Alistair, but not this name.

happycamper11 · 18/01/2020 08:36

Even a google throws up little about this name. One site states its a variation - not a direct version of Zachary but doesn't give a pronunciation, this thread is pretty near the top as there are so few results but one does give an audio which is pronounced 'Skarra' with a very soft K and rolled r's I doubt anyone with an English accent would actually be able to pronounce it as it's intended.

Jedimastermama · 21/01/2020 22:46

Thank you all for your replies. I just knew this version of the name didn’t sit right with me.

Partner is Scottish, I’ve been looking myself and not come across this name before.

When I looked at the name written down I initially thought people would pronounce it as sargary.

Thank you again all. I’m glad I asked on MN now and not gone ahead with partners suggestion.
