Never heard of or seen it before. Do you pronounce it the same?

Copperleaves · 15/01/2020 22:50

No

Copperleaves · 15/01/2020 22:50

But maybe somewhere far, far away in Scotland it is common? Not in central belt anyway.

Huntlybyelection · 15/01/2020 22:51

Um. Not heard of that one before. Or seen it.
Are you sure it's a name?

amazedmummy · 15/01/2020 22:51

Neither me nor DH have ever come across that, I'm from central Scotland he's from the north east.

BearFoxBear · 15/01/2020 22:51

Nope, literally never heard or seen it before. Wouldn't even know it was a name.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/01/2020 22:52

Gaelic names are more popular up here in the north but I haven't come across that one

SephrinaX · 15/01/2020 22:52

Never heard of it and I'm from the NE.

DesLynamsMoustache · 15/01/2020 22:52

Never heard of it.

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 15/01/2020 22:53

I’ve never heard of it and very, very few people would know how to pronounce it. I’d have guessed Si-gair.

It’s not like Ruaridh or Siobhan which we’re all used to.

Is your partner called Dave? I often find a correlation between people with one-spelling names picking names with hard-to-spell names for their kids because they don’t appreciate what it’s like to go through life with one!

i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/a3myap/drag-artist-and-model-sgaire-wood-feels-powerful-as-fuck

This seems to be the only Scottish person using it as a first name

DesLynamsMoustache · 15/01/2020 22:54

Is this the Scottish equivalent of Balonz?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/01/2020 22:54

Oh please let there be a drag artist called Balonz

Thestrangestthing · 15/01/2020 22:54

Nope, never heard it

dementedpixie · 15/01/2020 22:55

Googling suggests its pronounced SKAW ra

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 15/01/2020 22:56

Nope

Iwannatellyouastory · 15/01/2020 22:57

Never heard of it here in North East Scotland.
In a previous job I worked with schools in all LEA’s in Scotland and part of it involved putting kids names into a database. Usually about 3,000 per year I worked at the job for 8 years and never heard that name. I did see some out there names and about 8 different ways to spell some perfectly average sounding names.

Thestrangestthing · 15/01/2020 22:57

I don't know why people give their children names that no one would EVER be able to spell. Gaelic words sound nothing like the way they are written down. Do your child a favour and give them a name people will know how to spell

Mrsjayy · 15/01/2020 23:00

Never heard or seen it anywhere ever just call your son Zachary and be done with it. Balonz can't be a real name is it Hmm

Mummyeyes · 15/01/2020 23:02

Sounds too much like scar or scary. There are very few names on my no list but even I would be checking for a typo. How about Sagairt?

PineappleDanish · 16/01/2020 08:17

Never heard of it. Just use Zackary.

LemonBreeland · 16/01/2020 08:21

I've lived on the west coast and the east coast of Scotland and never heard of it.

Chemenger · 16/01/2020 08:21

Never seen or heard it before in my nearly 60 years of Scottishness. We have quite a few family friends who are native Gaelic speakers too, mostly elderly and haven’t come across it. My name is moderately hard to spell (apparently) and that’s a pain, don’t make a child’s life unnecessarily difficult.

HorridHamble · 16/01/2020 08:30

NE Scotland here. Never heard of it. But I think I like it.

prettybird · 16/01/2020 09:11

I'm also late 50s and have never heard the name. Glasgow but spent 15 years of going to Tiree, where we made many friends, and never came across it.
