Moving to Scotland

We are planning to relocate to Scotland sometime in the next couple of years. I was born in Glasgow and have always hoped to move back (moved down to England when I was a kid due to my parents’ jobs). We were originally looking at Linlithgow but houses for sale seem to be few and far between so we’re trying to make a list of potential areas. We need to be within a 45 minute train/drive to either Edinburgh or Glasgow, just to keep our options for work open as much as possible. I’d like to be in a big-ish town rather than in the middle of nowhere, and obviously schools are a top priority. Our son will be primary school age. Our budget is around £500k for a 4 bed detached. Moon on a stick? If you can suggest any nice areas I would be extremely grateful.

You will get a lot of house for your money here have a look at Dunblane rural but a town near the motorways and good school

Good schools* sorry

I'd recommend Houston/Bridge of Weir

You'll get a nice house well within your budget. The schools in Houston are excellent. People move into the area for Gryffe High.

10 mins from a station.
Half an hour or so to Glasgow & handy for the coast & Loch Lomond

You will get a LOT for 500k in the central belt!

Bonnybridge? Falkirk? Stirling?

Schools are shite everywhere though.

You could look down the west coast? Any of the towns on the Ayr-Glasgow train line are nice. Troon is particularly nice.

Agree with above poster though that Houston/Bridge of Weir are good choices.

The Falkirk area is an option too. Right in the middle between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

North Berwick? Smaller town, but lovely & good schools.

I would start by looking at good schools (usually East Renfrewshire, East Dumbarton eg Bearsden/Milngavie), Dunblane, Jordanhill in Glasgow, Linlithgow or North Berwick. Or Boroughmuir in Edinburgh.

Your money will go much further in the West.

Thanks all. Funnily enough I went to school in BOW, but I'd discounted it without even looking as I thought it'd be too expensive!

Stirling - you'd get a nice house for that.

There are some gorgeous houses on the market in Houston/BoW just now within your budget
