Class sizes

Our LA has passed its budget today and has decided to increase class sizes in P2 and P3 to a maximum of 30. Just wondering if this is the case in other authorities or just ours.

I think 30 is the statutory limit, our LA have P2-P3 classes of this size and 33 for P4-P7

The statutory limit is a piece of nonsense.

My daughter's year had a massive intake of about 65 in P1. So they had two straight P1 classes of 25, and a composite P1/2. At the start of P2, they announced that all the children would be split into two classes, one of 32 and one of 33.

Lots of parents up in arms and quoting the "no infant classes over 25" thing. Headteacher said that was "guidance" and could be ignored in special circumstances. How do you define "special circumstnaces" we asked? Well, said the Head, the fact that we have lots of children for a start. Hmm They also did weird things like having a P6/7 composite of 32 children and two full-time teachers.

So I wouldn't put much store in limits as there will be a get-out clause.

I'm in Edinburgh & classes of 30 are the standard here - all the local schools are bursting full & pretty much at capacity for the whole school.

Our council has just done this. Reasoning is that they always lose placing appeals between 25 and 30 so no point trying to buck the system.

(I actually prefer larger classes. DD2 was in a P1 of 17 and there were hardly enough children for choice of friendships. Also meant discipline was terrible as too small a group to contain the bigger personalities)

P1 is 25, P2 and 3 is 30 and P4 to P7 is 33

Same here. 25 P1, 30 P2-3 and then 33 from P4
