does advanced highers count towards uni requirements?

have a lot of conflicting advice here

ds needs an AB to get into his chosen uni, he's sitting 2 crash highers and an advanced higher

question is, will the mark in the advanced higher contribute to his requirements? (he got an A in the subject at higher and likes the subject so wanted to do advanced in it)

its not medicine/vet etc related

I would think, so an advanced Higher is worth more UCAS points but one problem could be that they don't count the same subject twice so eg. AH French would cancel out Higher French and then he would still need the other two Highers IYSWIM but I'm not a teacher just vaguely remember something like this on The Student Room forum. Why not contact the admissions officer where he wants to go?

But, note, some Scottish Universities don't make conditional offers. It is unconditional if they want you, based on what you have at the end of S5. So, if they want AAABB at Higher, in order for S6 grades to be considered he would need to apply next year. This is certainly the case for StA.

Others make conditional offers, in which case they will look at what he already has, his predictions, and offer accordingly.

PP is right. The same subject counts once so an A at AH is worth more points than A at a Higher but the Higher is then ignored.

According to the eprson from Stirling Uni who came along to talk at DSs school, it depends as PPs have said, Different Unis treat it in different ways and courses within each course may vary too. I have a similar thing with DS2, he only has 3 highers as he had a Nat 5 resit and chose not to sit one of his crash Highers. he's doing 2 more highers plus an AH. I said he'd maybe be better doing 3 highers but he loved the subject (english) and couldn't see anything else he wanted to swap to, He would have done an AH in Mod but the school don't offer it.

He doesn't yet know where he wants to apply to or what course he'd like so think it will be a case of more or less discounting the AH and choosing based on the highers he has plus the two he is sitting.

Last year DC1 received 5 offers, OK results from 5th year but not brilliant. They received 4 conditional offers from; Aberdeen, Dundee, Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt and unconditional from Napier.

In 6th year they were sitting 2xAH and 2xH (one a resit). The offers were based on higher results, or advanced higher results, or a combination. But simplest was 2AH at BB or 2xH at AA. I can't remember the combinations but may have been AH B, H A plus H B.

So short answer yes AH can count. I think a lot will depend on the course, for DC1 the AH were very relevant to the subject, what subject is your DC considering?

Agree - depends on the University. Friend's son who went to Oxbridge had a solid set of Higher passes, but their offer was conditional on certain advanced highers grades in S6.

When you say that he needs AB, do you mean in H or AH?

And is that his conditional offer or the entrance requirements stated on the university website ? Both of these are likely to stipulate exactly what they want eg AB at AH, with an A in Chemisty.
