So results day is here and I knew it would happen but in just over 3 weeks Dd will be moving to Dundee.

Thought I would start a thread to get us through those moments that we as parents find hard.

We’re going up tomorrow. Not sure what time yet but we’re under 1 hour away. Probably not till the afternoon but we’ll see. Ds is worried that as the rest of his flat move in today that there will be no room in the fridge or kitchen cupboards for his stuff. Think he’s also worried that I’ll embarrass him in front of his flat mates if they’ve not left space!! Good luck to those moving in this weekend!

Superjaggy · 01/09/2018 15:06

DS is in and unpacked - registration was really straightforward and he's busy paying his accommodation right now. He's met 2 flatmates so far and they seem just like him Smile

Parking is a bit of an issue but loads of folk parked on the grass verges. Tbh I wouldn't park in New Carnegie Court itself as it's tight.

As for the kitchen in NC, there's at least 1 top and 1 base cupboard for each of them - plus a tall larder cupboard with 5 shelves. And 2 fridge freezers!

Groovee · 01/09/2018 15:37

Dd is dropped off and food shop done. She flung us out and is now unpacking but we made up her bed

Thanks Superjaggy - good to know there’s plenty kitchen space and about the parking.
Note that my ds has just logged not his uni e-mail for the first time and he has an e-mail about course changes. He never thought to check his e-mail until now.

weegiemum · 01/09/2018 17:35

Good luck to everyone going off this weekend - Glasgow doesn't seem to start until next weekend. We went studio supply shopping today in The Range - £220 worth of pens and paper!! She's fully kitted out now and has vanished off to her room with her toolbox full of goodies to "practice".

1nutcracker · 01/09/2018 19:35

weegiemum
St Andrews is next weekend too.
Lidlfix
You are so right.

CraftyGin · 01/09/2018 19:49

But that was the East Suffolk road halls in Edinburgh

That was next door to my school. FV. RIP.

Groovee · 01/09/2018 20:01

Stirling is next weekend too. Was glad that Dundee was this weekend as we have a wedding next week.

It's all exciting stuff. DS just got me to help with his registration as he hadn't actually completed that! Hmm

Timetables are available from Monday apparently.

We are struggling a bit really to work out what he is meant to do. He has a faculty induction/welcome on Wk 1 (one on Tuesday and one on Thursday) so am I right in thinking that unless he wants to go down for any freshers events (unlikely that he will go on his own) that that is all he needs to do the first week? Oh, and pick up his registration card thing.?

We can't find out any information on selecting elective classes, don't know how many credits he needs or what he can choose from or how or when to do it Confused

I'm no help as I haven't been (technically I have as I did study at Uni for work) and DH did Nursing so a bit different and he also did OU which again is different.

Groovee · 01/09/2018 20:31

Dd has some things to attend next week along with her meet the mentor and it's then she chooses her electives. It may be explained when his timetable comes in.

Dd does have Fridays off until Christmas.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 01/09/2018 20:47

Thanks Groovee, we are just floundering a little and it's good to know that not everyone is sitting with everything chosen and timetabled :) We'll just be patient and see if there is any more news on Monday.

I think maybe a lot of students get Fridays off as it would explain all the student nights in the pubs on Thursday nights... :o

Groovee · 01/09/2018 21:13

My niece has classes every day. Dd has classes at 9am then 3pm so lots of hanging about.

OP posts:
Groovee · 01/09/2018 21:14

Dd only got her timetable yesterday as she was locked out of her account.

She's found the WiFi however 😂

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/09/2018 21:16

Ha ha, DS went on some app that's supposed to link up all the students from your class, he says there are about 20 folk registered, most joined months ago, only one person has posted (also months ago) no-one has replied. It's well seeing that it's all computer geeks! I think he has found his people... :o

Groovee · 01/09/2018 21:27

Lol.

Dd joined a group and found 6 of her flatmates.

She was whinging that there weren't many younger students on her course and a lot are mums from the group she's been chatting to.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/09/2018 21:31

He has a friend from school (who he hasn't spoken to since he left) that is going to the same uni but different faculty. I've said he should drop him a message and wish him luck and ask if he is going down to any events. I think friend may be moving down though so is probably more involved in things than DS is.

haggisaggis · 01/09/2018 21:51

At Aberdeen you have to choose your electives once you’ve registered online. All very easy ((although the e-mail today was to advise one of his electives was no longer running so he had to pick something else).

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/09/2018 21:53

That's a shame haggis. Has he managed to find something else suitable? I guess there are a range of different systems then so not so panicky that he's missed something now,

wigglybeezer · 02/09/2018 09:04

DS2 had to ask me what clubbing was yesterday, when I explained he said " why would would I want to do that?" I hope he doesn't feel too isolated, sitting in halls with a mug of Tea and a book. The only time he ever gets grumpy is if his sleep is disturbed. He can always come home for a night or two to get some rest if he really has to....

Groovee · 02/09/2018 10:27

Dd ended up going out to the union last night. Then getting the wee bus home to West Park. Stocker of a hangover now😂

OP posts:
Aurea · 02/09/2018 12:02

Good luck to you and all your DCs.

This will be me this time next year.....

howabout · 02/09/2018 12:07

I'm sitting here wishing them all good luck too. DD1 will be the one sitting at home with her cup of tea a la wiggly junior next year. 9pm is her self imposed bedtime so if she goes away to halls it may be an interesting adjustment.

Superjaggy · 02/09/2018 12:39

Well my DS has been away 1 whole night and I'm desperate for him to make contact! 2 unanswered texts so far (one to remind him to freeze his loaf 😬 and one asking him if he might have accidentally taken the TV remote) so I'm going to have to leave him alone now....

Groovee · 02/09/2018 14:16

Dd hasn't stopped texting

Just back from Aberdeen.

He seems to have settled in although it did get fraught at times. You could see lots of other parents following their offspring with that "I love you darling but at times I could throttle you" expression Grin

He didn't want us to go into the flat with him until he had been in himself - which was understandable. He then couldn't work out how to get into his room Hmm He could tell that at least 3 other flat mates were in already as he could see the food/kitchen stuff - but they all seemed to be asleep.

Eventually he accepted that one of us would need to help him we couldn't stand by the car forever - but so I went with him but he got it sorted (even if he did make me whisper Confused)

It was 9.45 by this point Hmm

He met one of his flat mates which seemed to help relax him stop him being a stroppy bugger who then started helping him decant stuff into the kitchen (up until them he was insisting on putting everything into his bedroom and complaining that I'd brought too much there wasn't enough room Confused). (I had already had to endure complaints like "Why did you buy me bleach" Wink)

Anyway, he was told by the one guy (who was from Dundee) that there were 2 guys from Edinburgh and the last one, that they hadn't met yet, was Polish.

After getting relatively sorted (only bit of "unpacking" I did in his bedroom was putting on his bedlinen which he actually appreciated Shock, as it meant he had somewhere to sleep tonight) we went to do the Lidl shop and had lunch with his cousin at Grub (which he's obsessed with Hmm and plans to eat there regularly).

Our drive back down was uneventful. Got in to a message from ds saying that was in the flat. I asked if that was the Russian X from rugby (who'd left the club after years of Mini rugby together when they started secondary as he went off to a private school) and was that the "Pole"? Turns out it is Shock He's not met him yet - just his mum - but they used to be good friends (came to birthday parties etc).

Small world! GrinShock

So that's 2 Weegies, 2 Edinburgers and 1 Dundonian in the flat.
