Moving to Edinburgh

Hi all,

Me, DP and our 3 kids are looking to relocate to Edinburgh in the next year or two. I know the city well but not the surrounding towns/villages and it's the outskirts we'd want to move to. We currently rent and will probably look for rental until we know the area well enough to buy. I'm looking for somewhere that's nice for families and somewhere with a garden. Eldest DS has ASD and currently attends a SEN school so proximity to a good SEN school is important too.

Any ideas? Our budget will probably be £1200 pcm absolute max. Though we currently pay £500 pcm so the place would have to be special!

Where should I be looking? Where should I avoid?

Don’t know what the schools are like, but these are nice suburbs of Edinburgh

Cramming
Juniper green
Currie can be pricy
Balerno (can be pricy)
Haddington
North Berwick
Portobello

I'd add Bonaly and Corstorphine to Lipsticks list.

Roslin is a nice village in Midlothian with a great regular bus service into Edinburgh.

The suburbs of Edinburgh listed above are the nicest. Balerno is quite far out though. I've heard Portobello is quite nice now. When I was growing up it didn't have a good reputation.

Morningside and Bruntsfield are lovely but you're unlikely to get a house there, it's all flats.

I would add Loanhead to the list- great shopping, even IKEA! There are lots of new build houses near the main bus routes into Edinburgh. The centre of Loanhead isn't great but it's got so much nearby.

I would second Roslin, it's lovely.

Ahh never been to roslin, is it nice then
Some nice villages mid and East Lothian

I’ve always had a hanker to live North Berwick from my student days, never lived there but visited and loved it

Renting is expensive in Edinburgh- have a look on Rightmove or S1 homes to see what you can get for your money. A house in a good area for £1250 could be difficult; if you are prepared to go for a flat or 2 bedrooms then it's do-able.

SEN schools you can find on Edinburgh council website. The school you attend isn’t by catchment but rather by need as some specialise in more complex needs. They run a bus service across the city to collect children so don’t let this limit your search.

Place marking as we are also hoping to move in the next year or two!
