Scottish Curriculum - S3 resources / practice

DS is going into S3 this year. His school doesn't set a lot of homework, but instead asks pupils to revise each subject for 30mins-1hr a week.

He has been using his class notes and some online resources such as BBC Bitesize etc, but someone has just mentioned Leckie and Leckie for the Scottish Curriculum on another thread which looks good. Are these the best resources for Scottish S3?

I am planning on ordering the Physics and Chemistry books which cover S1-S3 and he can use these to read up about the topic he is on.

For Maths it gets a bit more confusing......they have:

CfE Maths Pupil Books (Level 2, 3 and 4) - I assume going into S3 he will be on Level 4? He is in the top class for maths, but is slipping slightly and he wants to practice relevant questions at home.

There is a book with maths Level 3 practice questions, but none for maths Level 4. There are Nat 4 practice questions, but are they relevant for going into S3 (don't want to get him something beyond what the teachers will be covering in S3)?

If you have used these books in S3 before do you recommend them?

I found bright red study guides useful and they have a lot of online resources too.

Oooft, Leckie are good but I recommend past papers from upwards of 10yrs ago (I left HS in 2000).

We were the year hit with Higher Stills and our HS grades were converted into Highers eventually but following years found exams very easy - that has changed but not in all subjects.

Surely the school should have past papers somewhere and be setting free periods or times up for study practice for exams?

Also check local colleges as they sometimes have revision classes on for HS students.

You're maybe best getting him to ask his class teacher which ones they recommend

umberella the Bright Red Study guides start at Nat 4, are they suitable from the beginning of S3?

gryffen he's not at past paper stage yet I don't think! He will just be starting S3 work after the easter holidays so unlikely to have covered enough yet for past papers.

I am looking for S3 Scottish CfE relevant resources and practice for the home study the school is asking them to do in place of homework as he get bored reading his class notes.

JO208 I wish he would ask, but he's reluctant. He is quite good at sitting down for 30-60mins after school and doing a bit of study and is motivated as he has found it has helped his results for class tests, but he'd never admit to any of his friends he studies! It isn't cool Hmm

Not a Maths teacher but from dreaded "please takes" in Maths and watching my DDs complete homework TeeJay seems favoured by many schools for BGE. DDs' school also has lots of resources on the website. A top set S3 should be working on 4th level to progress on to Nat 5 in S4. Nat 4 and 4th level should cover broadly similar skills. Physics and Chemistry will be trickier to find S3 material for as the Nationals are designed to be 1 year courses delivered in senior phase.

I think it depends on what level they are at. Ds sat Nat4 in S3 while doing the Nat5 curriculum while Dd was level 4.

Our school produces revision booklets that they give out at the start of each term. This covers what they should do in class over that term. It helps a lot. I wouldn't start any past papers until they are reaching prelim stage. The SQA website has the past papers on it.

Thanks, I've ordered the Leckie and Leckie chemistry, physics S1-3 and maths 4th level, I managed to get a 30% off code too! [Grin]

I'll have a look at the other suggestions if these ones don't work out.
