Issues with deer in the suburbs?

When we first moved into this house right on the edge of Glasgow seeing deer was a very rare occurrence. We;d see perhaps one or two over the course of a winter when the weather was at its worst and we'd assumed that the deer had come off the hills to look for food.

10 years on and they're everywhere - there are deer in the field behind the house every day, and not just one or two, there were 12 yesterday. I think they're Sika deer, small brown ones with a white bum. No natural predators, nobody's hunting them and controlling the numbers. Friend had a very close shave on a local road last week when two deer bounded out in front of her, and someone else locally had their garden trashed by a deer which got in and couldn't get out.

Surely this isn't just a Glasgow issue??

How strange. Are you near any big building works- new housing estate or the new motorway?

kaytee87 · 25/02/2018 17:52

They're everywhere in bearsden & milngavie.
My mum has one that comes into her garden and eats her flowers Grin

My first thought was that their usual habitats are being disrupted...any new estates being built?

GetTaeBed · 25/02/2018 19:49

I have friends in the outskirts of Edinburgh and since two housing estates started to be build deer have become more regular. They have been pushed out by the house builders

They’ve maybe bred too much? On big estates in the country one of the jobs of gamekeepers is to keep the herds at a certain level - they have a number that has to be killed each year.

No idea what you’d do in a city- maybe phone Environmental Health?

In Edinburgh it’s because the green belt is being built on. Where is wildlife meant to go?

k2p2k2tog · 25/02/2018 22:47

We're in Bearsden/Milngavie. Yes there's building going on but not on farmland. I think it's just that they're breeding and nothing is preying on them to keep numbers steady.

My 9 year old has been plotting all day how he's going to sneak into the field in his camo gear and trap a deer with his football gloves, a bit of netting and some sticks. Quite what he plans on doing with one when he catches it is another matter...

I think the new builds at the allander will have disturbed some.

if you're worried about it you could try contacting Scottish Natural Heritage - think they have responsibility for deer control.
