Change Notre Dame High School from girls only

Glasgowlassie · 21/02/2018 11:31

I have 2 children, currently at Notre Dame Primary in Glasgow. I have only just discovered, due to a recent campaign that my son and daughter will not be able to go to the same High School.

Girls are enrolled into Notre Dame High School, an all girls high school, this is state funded and a total anomaly, the only one of its kind in Scotland. My daughter must go there unless I can get her into another local school via a placing request, becoming increasingly difficult in the West End.

My son has to go to the linked school 3 miles away, St Thomas Aquinas, if I can't get him into another school which is closer.

Over 75% of the girls in this girls only school come from a distance via placing request. So this has an impact on the local community and the environment.

There is a campaign to change this which is how I became aware that my children would not even be allowed to go to St Thomas Aquinas without a placing request for my daughter.

In 2018 there is no place for an all girls school as it is discriminatory. Schools should serve their local area first.

Campaign is here for anyone that is interested and wants to help change it. Particularly people from Glasgow.

Cursory google, found school handbook Page 27, took seconds to find Notre dame school handbook it clearly documents the high school for boys as TA
Primary to Secondary
Pupils are normally transferred between ages 11 1⁄2 and 12 1⁄2 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least 4 years of secondary education. Parents will be informed of the arrangements no later then December of the year preceding the date of transfer at the start of the new session.
Schools to which pupils normally transfer:-
Girls - Notre Dame High School 160 Observatory Road
Glasgow G12 9LN
Tel. 0141 582 0190
Boys - St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School 112 Mitre Road
Glasgow G14 9PP
Tel. 0141 582 0280

Wee weegie op has been offered a guaranteed high school place. RC high schools take from rc feeder schools. Giving a guaranteed place to op. Other parents seeking a place need to make placement request

The non denom schools take from their own non denom feeder school
If one wants another school you complete placement request.

You won’t get two offers eg rc and non denom high school

St ninian a Popular r.c high school is looking at declining placement requests and prioritising r.c pupils

I have old Uni friends who went to Laurel Bank and Park and commuted in from East Dumbartonshire. Also had friends who went to the High School and the Academy from East Renf. Wasn't much competition from the middle classes for West End, East Dumb or East Renf State schools back then. Changed days.

As Fraying that's so mean when I went to all the effort of linking and summarising when you asked me.....do I smell a rat? Do you not want to post links and have them looked at??

I’ve signed it. I went to ND years ago, and maybe benefited from it being single sex. But I would also have benefited from a Co- Ed education- because it’s more socially appropriate.
As a mum I also think it’s important for siblings to the same school

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/02/2018 18:13

If was so important to op she should have researched Ndhs policy in the online handbook

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/02/2018 18:16

The whit school question, yea still gets asked, and the same ol reasons
No right answer, depends on who’s asking and their preferred

Glasgowlassie · 23/02/2018 19:51

Thanks Thisseat. Nice to have the support of a ex pupil of the high school. Are you stil in the area?

Ihavebrillo the problem isn't TA's results at all. I believe its results are broadly on a par with ND high. I would be delighted to send both my children there, but only my son has an automatic place - that's the issue

7 years ago the oversubscription of schools was not an issue and when I enrolled my son at school the same chats that occur now were not taking place.

ClaudiaNaughton · 23/02/2018 20:01

We found the ND nuns terrifying.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/02/2018 20:03

But 7 year ago TA was the secondary school for ND Boys and ND girls progress to NDHS
And anything else was still placement request
The placement requests have always been fraught & fierce for hyndland and hillhead.isnt new
So dd he’s p7 and you’ve only recently discovered your daughter isn’t automatically placed at TA?
