House clearance and valuations

In central Scotland and clearing out a house, some things are antiques and will have some value, how do I go about getting valuations? Anyone know a good auction house to use? Would you get several valuations?

Try McTears in Glasgow. Think there is also an auctioneer in the west end who specialises in small collectables but don't know the name . McTears have been around a long time - my dad was an antique dealer and dealt with them.

Thank you will have a look at them, someone else suggested Robertson's of Kinbuck in Dunblane?

I dealt with this for a relative's estate a couple of years back. Solicitor gave me a couple of recommendations. I wouldn't get too hung up on values of antiques as once house clearing and auction costs are paid any residual is likely to be small. If there is anyone in the family who would like anything of value as a keepsake and no prospect of causing family disputes by distributing "unevenly" then that is usually better value than selling at auction.

I agree that selling things at auction rarely generates large return - unless you have something extremely rare or valuable !

We’ve done a house clearance through Robertson’s of Kinbuck. They were very good to deal with and it was very easy. If you give them a ring they’ll explain the process.

They recommended a couple of specialist places for a few of the pieces we were left and cleared the rest of the house. We/the estate did make money but once we as a family had chosen a few sentimental bits we just wanted the rest dealt with.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I rang them today and suspect you are right that there isn't really enough value in the things to make it worthwhile and we already said we would like to keep some things so may not leave much to do.
