Christmas or Hogmanay?

NoelNiki · 01/12/2017 21:39

Just that.

What is better in Scotland? I have the choice to arrive just before xmas and stay for hogmanay.

Or arrive well before Christmas and go home earlier and miss hogmanay

I am not one for Hogmanay, but if you are visiting and jaunting then post christmas and Hogmanay is probably going to be more fun with people than the pre christmas whirl and then being home alone on NYD

Lidlfix · 01/12/2017 22:08

Is it a couples or a family trip? Sweeping generalisation alert BlushBlush. Go Xmas for family or Hogmanay for couple. Lots of the attractions are geared on way or t'other.

NoelNiki · 02/12/2017 00:21

Just me. Lonely fucker here staying with a friend.

If you’re going out Hogmanay is good but depends where you go. I find the older I get the less I enjoy it!

NoelNiki · 02/12/2017 00:26

What about just general events on the week between xmas a d hogmanay?

Is there lots on?

Hogmanay, hands down! Whereabouts in Scotland are you staying? It's usually lovely and sociable and there's a real party atmosphere

NoelNiki · 02/12/2017 00:28

Closer to Glasgow but Edinburgh is 50 mins by train.

GruffaloPants · 02/12/2017 00:29

Hogmanay (and the lead up) is definitely better for socialising.

AgentProvocateur · 02/12/2017 00:56

Hogmanay. Definitely. Christmas is for the kids, but nothing much happens.

NoelNiki · 02/12/2017 11:08

Im not that bothered about Christmas myself. So thanks for that will dodge Christmas.

Are there lots of events leading up to Hogmanay?

What exactly are you looking for? Do you want to go to the street parties etc? I've not been for years but I don't know if you can still get tickets.

Have a back up plan in case the outdoor events get cancelled.

TBH it's really not that different from anywhere else's NY, it just gets hyped up

NoelNiki · 02/12/2017 13:07

God what a dour attitude. I'll stay in London, no other city tops it.

OP posts:
Littlewhistle · 02/12/2017 14:34

There's nothing special about Christmas or Hogmanay in Scotland any more. I used to love Hogmanay when I was young, calling at people's houses that you didn't even know and getting lots of drink and food, but nobody seems to do that any more.

Hauntedlobster · 02/12/2017 16:04

If you can get a ticket for the Street party it’s good or head to the merchant city for a party.

There used to be an amazing Hogmanay in Glasgow but it ends well before the bells these days.

Have a look on people make glasgow, it’s all listed there😊

Nyx · 02/12/2017 22:25

There are loads of things on in Glasgow from now until Hogmanay, I'm rubbish at links, but if you copy and paste this URL give you an idea. We don't know what sort of thing you're into, I'm sorry you feel there's been a dour attitude Hmm

GruffaloPants · 03/12/2017 09:13

Eh? Maybe you don't know what dour means. Because people have tried to be nice and helpful.

Or maybe a "London Troll" is a new thing. Comes on a thread to ask about holiday plans, gets advice, then days "meh, London is better". Hmm

Nyx · 03/12/2017 13:38

To be fair, the OP has had more than one reply from people along the lines of 'hogmanay in Scotland used to be good but it's now crap' which have sounded a bit off-putting. Who says Hogmanay celebrations finish before the bells? Not in my experience!

Seriously, OP, there are some fab times to be had in Glasgow and I'm sure Edinburgh too. Hope you enjoy it if you do come up!

dementedma · 03/12/2017 13:41

hogmanay certainly isn't the family thing it used to be so will be a street party and fireworks like any other place in the big cities. Probably more pipes and reeling but not hugely different to anywhere else.

Nyx · 04/12/2017 00:17

The OP didn't ask if Hogmanay in Scotland was better than anywhere else - the question was whether she should come to Scotland for Christmas or Hogmanay? Why all the 'it's no better than anywhere else' chat?

Hope you've not been put right off, OP.
