Just thought I'd start a wee thread for those with DC applying for uni for next year (or indeed applying for themselves) in ase anyone was up for sharing knowledge/support/venting etc.

I have DS1 applying for this year. Still doesn't know where to or what for Confused.

Not done any open days yet and lots now clashing so can't do them all. He wont go alone and wont ask anything or tell us anything about it if he did, so looks like it might be family days out for the next month or so. Dragging DS2 with us as he is currently doing Highers and given his poor Nat 5 results, he needs some motivation to pull his finger out if he wants to go to Uni.

How is everyone else getting on?

Well done to your dd Sturm Smile

Ds is a wee bit jealous of his friends applying for Science subjects as they've already got offers (mostly Unconditionals) - but then he remembers how much he is not enjoying his AH Physics. Wink

prettybird · 20/02/2018 18:22

Ds has just got an Unconditional through from Aberdeen for Politics and International Relations 🎉🎉🎉🎉 He's overjoyed as that means (best case scenario) he has a Uni he wants to go to if he gets a conditional from Edinburgh and he screws up his exams and (worst case scenario) he gets rejected by Edinburgh, he can firm Aberdeen.

He said he was really really apprehensive going into his tracker after getting the notification to check it. He then shouted, "Yah Belter".
Another month probably before we hear from Edinburgh.

Superjaggy · 20/02/2018 18:54

Brilliant, prettybird!

My DS got his offer for the same course today too, and it's his top choice 😀. Aaaaaaand relax!

prettybird · 20/02/2018 19:06

....so if he ends up there, they'll no doubt get to know each other! Grin

Edinburgh is still his 1st choice though - mainly partly because he wants to play for an Edinburgh rugby club so he has a better chance of being spotted and maybe occasionally still come across and play for the U18 team at our local club (the U16 team which will be going up to join with the the "2nd year" U18s is in the final of the Scottish Cup so is a strong wee team with a good coach)

Groovee · 20/02/2018 19:37

Great news Superjaggy and Prettybitd.

Superjaggy · 20/02/2018 20:10

Hopefully he'll hear from Edinburgh soon then pretty, so he can decide which path to take - sounds like it will be a tricky decision! Would be funny if our DS' did end up meeting each other though - "My mum kind of virtually knows your mum" 🤷🏼‍♂️

prettybird · 20/02/2018 20:33

It would indeed Superjaggy - except that he would kill me if he knew I'd posted about him on t'internet ShockBlush

Can't even post about his offer on my Facebook timeline Hmm but I do belong to a couple of supportive "secret" groups where I can post Wink

Superjaggy · 20/02/2018 21:04

Same! Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 20/02/2018 23:16

Oh well done to all those with new offers! It's great to hear all the positive posts. Fingers crossed to all those still waiting. Hopefully Edinburgh will get their fingers out and get those long awaited decisions out. DS here has still made no effort to narrow down his choices.

My niece has been Rejected from Strathclyde. It's her first rejection as she has an unconditional and a conditional elsewhere.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/02/2018 13:20

That's a shame groovee I hope that wasn't her first choice?

OP posts:
OwlMother · 23/02/2018 09:48

Edinburgh must have started with their offers. Ds has just got an unconditional today. Totally insufferable now.

prettybird · 23/02/2018 09:57

Brilliant owlmother FlowersStar What was that for?

Eve · 23/02/2018 10:00

... spotted this thread - this was me last year.

If anyone needs any advice / guidance on the DSA process let me know - as we have painfully been though it.

OwlMother · 23/02/2018 10:03

Architecture, he's heard from 4/5 now, only UCL to go now and he feels that one is too much of a stretch. Financially we really need him not to get into that one. It would be great, but disastrous simultaneously!

prettybird · 23/02/2018 10:04

Fingers crossed for you Owlmother Wink

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/02/2018 10:18

Great News Owl and fingers crossed for the "right" result from UCL Wink

Thanks Eve, that's very kind. I don't even know what DSA is so I'm well behind the curve...

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/02/2018 10:20

I think there are a lot on the thread waiting for Edinburgh decisions so it will be good if those are all going to come soon.

OP posts:
Groovee · 23/02/2018 12:24

Great News Owl.

Wax it wasn't her first choice but a shock I think as she's been so luck up to now.

Still no news from Stirling and Dundee told her to not expect anything til late March.

Groovee · 23/02/2018 12:24

@Eve what is DSA?

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/02/2018 12:49

Groovee Just googled - think it is Disabled Student Allowances.

OP posts:
Eve · 23/02/2018 12:51

DSA - Disabled Students allowance

if you have a child that requires extra help for exams due to dyslexia (like mine) or other issues... then there is funding to be applied for from student finance to provide that support. Universities wont give the support without certain assessments being carried out.

We weren't aware of the process or the time it takes so my DS was well into 1st term before everything was in place.

Groovee · 23/02/2018 12:54

Interesting to know. Dd won't need it. But can share with others x

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/02/2018 12:59

Thanks Eve. My DSs haven't been diagnosed with anything (although looking to see if DS2 has dyspraxia) but both currently get support for exams (typing rather than writing). I presume that without a diagnosis there is no point and suspect that written type assessments will be very few nowadays anyway so probably don't need support for that?

Eve · 23/02/2018 13:38

In DS's experience which is for engineering, he has had quite a few 3000 word written assignments already. His DSA allowance has provided him with a laptop and dictation software to help him with these and also enabled a scribe to be available for his exams.

Its worth thinking about.
