Glasgow MNers- school holiday consultation

Am I being dim or are there really no changes, apart from a marginally earlier return date?

No real changes. The start date moves around a day or two some years - usually when Easter is outwith the Spring Break, so they need to make up the required number of school openings elsewhere.

I just wish they'd sort out the February break and make it a full week. Stirlingshire and other areas? has managed to do it. Why can't Glasgow? Confused

North lanarkshire doesn't have a full week in February either

PoppyPopcorn · 27/08/2017 10:05

We're in East Dunbartonshire and don't get a full week in February either - not sure I'd want a full week at that time of year TBH. Would rather have a couple of extra days at Easter or Christmas.

Our holidays are almost exactly the same as Glasgow, give or take a day here or there. One model which seems to work well is in Fife I think, where they go back a couple of days earlier in summer, have no September weekend but instead have 2 weeks in October - lots of people I know use that break to have their main family holiday abroad as it's so much cheaper than summer.

Oh and Council "consultations" are just a box ticking exercise - they'll do what they want to do anyway.

StoorieHoose · 27/08/2017 10:06

You get both May holidays and september weekend? We don't in Stirlingshire although I'm glad of the second May Day holiday that Inget off but DD is in School. We don't get any holidays from start of year until October week

PoppyPopcorn · 27/08/2017 10:10

Stirlingshire went back almost a week later than we did this year - we were back on 16th Aug and Stirlingshire was back on 22nd. It all evens itself out in the end - all kids in Scotland state schools will have the same number of days, there is just a wee bit of regional variation.

I saw 'consultation' and wondered if they were doing something really drastic. DD's school posted it on FB too.

I quite like the few days off in February. Any longer would be too long, with the usual weather and still being skint from Christmas.

I've been wondering for a while if they'll switch to the way Edinburgh works (which would be a fecking nightmare tbh). It's weird that there is so many differences throughout the country. I've got a friend who lives up north and her P1 finishes half an hour earlier than her P4.

The lunchtime finish on a Friday in Edinburgh has been going for decades though - we definitely did it at secondary and I left school in 1990. It must work for parents - assuming there's maybe more afterschool clubs or something?
