Moving to Scotland - wanting to be commutable distance by train

Hi,

New on here, I was just wanting to know if anybody could give me some advice p!ease.

We are wanting to move to Scotland in 2 years, planning to rent for 6 months before purchasing a house to see where we like, we want to be a commutable distance by train to Glasgow centre. I'm wanting advice on nice areas / villages, by then we won't need school's. Over the year we have various holidays booked so we can investigate different areas.

Any help / ideas will be much appreciated, thanking you in anticipation.

I'm sure that some Glasgow folks will be in soon to advise on that area. Outside of Glasgow both Bridge of Allan & Dunblane are worth considering.

We are in Hamilton, which is 30 mins from Glasgow and 40 mins from Edinburgh. It's not the most amazing town, but has pretty much everything you need and good transport links, some really nice areas some not so great. I grew up here and moved back from posher Newton Mearns(which I hated) to get better value for money in terms of housing (and free child care from my dad!) Lanarkshire is definitely worth a look

Depends what you are looking for - I'm a city person so woudl rather be in Glasgow itself, but in your situation I would look at Milngavie.

DO you need to be commutable for work purposes or just to visit city centre now and then? Also what kind of property are you looking to buy/budget. DO you want suburbs or more country feel? Sure we can help you focus on a few areas with a bit more info. Milngavie/Bearsden good for access to the countryside and have excellent train links to Glasgow centre. House prices high though because of good schools in the area.

Thank you all so much, our daughter will hopefully be studying at the RCS, so will be going into Glasgow a number of times per week.

We would need a good sized 2 bedroom property and would hopefully be able to spend £200,000 (I know it won't buy us a palace) and would like more of a country feel.

You could try Helensburgh. 45 minute train to Glasgow.

200000 for a two bed is quite a lot up here, you'll be able to get something no problem. Milngavie is great, short train ride and very country feeling. Lovely town too. Lenzie is nice. Out to the west there are lovely villages in Renfrewshire, Quarriers, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan all great. (I live in one of them!)

Is it a family home or a student flat for your dd?

you can go in any direction out from glasgow really. linlithgow is about 35-40 mins by train to glasgow and 15 mins to edinburgh.

outwith that, anything going out towards the west coast beaches are quite nice.

Apart from your daughter, what do you want/need workwise, hobbywise & housestyle.

Would second all the suggestions and you could also include Troon and Ayr or some suburban areas of Glasgow that have not been mentioned - like Giffnock, Clarkston, Busby and Newton Mearns to the south or to the north Bishopbriggs which all have bits that which I think are quite country like (but then I grew up right in Glasgow) along with all the amenities you would need.Stirling is also easily commutable.
