Argh - how to vote !

In scotsnet as this is a uniquely Scottish problem - apologies if there's a politics area somewhere that I should be in.

My postal vote has been sitting staring at me for days.

I know who I don't want to get in. As a non-scots British person with an English DH, I'll do everything I can to avoid another referendum.

Our local Labour MP actually does a lot for the local community and seems like a good egg. But the overall party is a disaster and SNP are talking about going jointly with Labour so they can push through another independence vote.

I cannot bring myself to vote Tory after what they've done - also every time they think up a remotely fair taxation idea i.e. making self employed pay same taxes as employed or making rich OAPs pay for care, even though Ruth Davidson seems very different from the conservatives in England, can't bear to watch the Westminster crowing when/if they get a huge victory.

My heart says Lib-Dems and in fact I've done some campaigning for them at local level, but pre voting questionnaires seem to suggest it's a 3 way race between Lab/Con/SNP so it would be a wasted vote.

Is anyone else really struggling to decide for this election?

that's partly why I think we need PR - the debate on social media, mumsnet has gotten too nasty. We all have more that unites us than divides as and if parties had to rely on each other more for coalitions, it may reduce the mudslinging somewhat.

agree OOAML, I've got no idea what the mayors are in charge of, what they can achieve and what the limits of their powers are.

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 12:36

I wish Labour and Tories hadn't made it about independence. Just voted but not impressed with scottish Labour. Feel ill about overall Tory majority though

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 12:37

So voted Labour

Nyx · 08/06/2017 12:57

I haven't seen any assumptions like that from snp supporters Hamlets, I am one and I certainly don't assume people who dislike the SNP are Tories. I assume they are unionists, who can be from pretty much any party or none!

dementedma · 08/06/2017 13:13

Check put the Playmobil election thread. Some real voter angst on that - and very funnny!

Nyx · 08/06/2017 13:44

LOL demented - just had a look and it's fantastic Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 13:51

Ssd I have long assumed you were a "Labour or SNP staffer" Your and leader's petulant comments are risible.

I've been here about 4 years now. Was fervently No and, until the coming of the blessed Corbyn , had voted Labour in 9 previous elections.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 13:53

But if Salmond loses his seat tomorrow it will make my year!!

Oh the joy.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 14:15

Does anyone have an opinion on who best to vote for to try to keep the SNP out in East Ren? The polls and the bookies are saying different things....

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 14:17

Was just thinking how pleasant and civilised this thread was until that comment Lass

dementedma · 08/06/2017 15:45

I must admit it will be hard to suppress a grin if Salmond loses his seat. Smug git.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 16:12

Really ? With you and ssd throwing out the "Tory staffers" lines?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 16:15

Beebeeeight

I see Tory staffers are hard at work on this thread

To be fair you and ssd merely seconded and thirded that comment. Still a petulant response.

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 16:15

Whatever

Groovee · 08/06/2017 18:20

Couldn't vote for the Tory bloke, couldn't vote for SNP after he spent an interview slating the other candidates again and I remembered why he didn't get voted into Holyrood last year. And the lib dem candidate doesn't live in the city! Still struggling!

Bejazzled · 08/06/2017 18:31

trixy. It is a difficult on in East Ren, for me too.

Paul Masterson the conservative is actually very good and done some work on trying to prevent the cooncil building all over what remains of the green belt. I'm going for him.

The Labour guy is new to me, Blair McDougall, but has a background in Better Together......but the thought of Corbyn et al makes me very worried.

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 18:53

If the bookies and other sources on tactical voting can't agree, it's likely too close to call so go with your gut.

Edinburgh West? I don't have a problem voting for the Tory candidate but am really struggling to know what to do between Tory and Lib Dem.

Dailystuck71 · 08/06/2017 19:07

I did a hard thing today......voted Tory. In my area SNP won by only a few hundred votes with tories second. This is a vote against indy2. I couldn't bear to wake up tomorrow listening to NS bleeding on about it again if the SNP do well tonight.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 21:20

I stuck with Lib Dem. They have really pushed here. Hope the bookies were correct.

ssd · 08/06/2017 21:21

bejazzled, are you opposed to the council building affordable homes in East Ren then?

Bejazzled · 08/06/2017 21:30

ssd There are a measly amount of affordable homes being built in Newton Mearns 🙄 You are very naive if you think otherwise.
The average house price in NM is around £315K and rising! It's 99% private housebuilders.

I am opposed to pristine green belt being sold off to Cala and other 'prestige' house builders when there is quite a lot of brown field areas that could be cleaned up and re-used, but that would be much less profitable.

ssd · 08/06/2017 21:42

the way you wrote that the council are building on green belt I thought you meant they were actually building council homes.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 22:09

Oh my god, have you seen the exit polls?!

SNP predicted to be down to 34 seats!! Please please let this be true.

Cons losing overall majority. I'm happy with that as long as Corbyn doesn't go into coalition with the snp.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 22:10

Oh please , please. Seems far too good to be true.
