Argh - how to vote !

In scotsnet as this is a uniquely Scottish problem - apologies if there's a politics area somewhere that I should be in.

My postal vote has been sitting staring at me for days.

I know who I don't want to get in. As a non-scots British person with an English DH, I'll do everything I can to avoid another referendum.

Our local Labour MP actually does a lot for the local community and seems like a good egg. But the overall party is a disaster and SNP are talking about going jointly with Labour so they can push through another independence vote.

I cannot bring myself to vote Tory after what they've done - also every time they think up a remotely fair taxation idea i.e. making self employed pay same taxes as employed or making rich OAPs pay for care, even though Ruth Davidson seems very different from the conservatives in England, can't bear to watch the Westminster crowing when/if they get a huge victory.

My heart says Lib-Dems and in fact I've done some campaigning for them at local level, but pre voting questionnaires seem to suggest it's a 3 way race between Lab/Con/SNP so it would be a wasted vote.

Is anyone else really struggling to decide for this election?

Morris, Labour in Scotland aren't against Tories. Kezia wants you to vote Tory in Scotland where they might beat the SNP. Seriously. This isn't a joke or anything

Seems entirely sensible.

The SNP weasel in my constituency is trying to say it is a 3 way fight with Lib Dems and Tories presumably to split the Unionist vote as the indicators would seem to suggest Lib Dems are favourites.

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 07:36

Personally I'd love to see more unionist coalition work in the Scottish parliament

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 07:52

Lib dems 50/1 for Edinburgh north and leith, cons second so conservative it is - thanks for bookies tip!

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 08:25

If SNP dont get in Edinburgh north and leith I will be exceedingly surprised.

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 08:29

I'm not getting my hopes up - a lot of staunch labour folk like DH can't vote conservative so I expect the lib dem vote share to rise.

At least overall I hope to see a rise in the vote for pro union parties.

CocoaLeaves · 08/06/2017 08:36

My constituency has a good chance of returning a LibDem, who I would vote for as local MP, so I am voting LibDem.
I did, for the first time in my life, vote Conservative in the last Scottish elections. But that was for different reasons. I think in the OP's situation, I would vote LibDem. It is never a wasted vote if you vote with your conscience.

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 08:41

Yes exactly what I said to my DH - the SNP will look at the % votes for pro union parties around Scotland in the general. We need PR/STV for general elections now I feel...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/06/2017 08:46

if SNP dont get in Edinburgh north and leith I will be exceedingly surprised

Bookies are putting Conservatives slightly ahead.

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 08:46

Will still be surprised

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 08:54

The conservative candidate for Edinburgh North & Leith has a long history of Scottish and overseas charity work - he looks like an impressive candidate, and part of his campaign has been around improving services for rough sleepers.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 09:12

As much as I would like to see the SNP's stranglehold on Scotland reduced by as much as the polls predict I still fear the unionist vote will be too split. We'll be sending the same shrill, antagonistic, chip on their shoulder fannies to embarrass us.

There was a time when Scotland's politicians were admired. Such a shame it's not the case anymore.

Nyx · 08/06/2017 09:30

The cringe is strong in this one. Trixy, as far as I can see Scottish politicians are admired by most for their sensible and capable work - it's mainly the frothing Unionist element who love to call names...

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 09:47

Oh you're damn right i cringe.

And you're so wrong saying they are admired!! How can you be happy with the likes of Pete Wishart, Natalie Mcgarry, John Nicolson and Paul Mognahan (I could go on) representing us!

They are a national laughing stock.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 09:49

I will say though that i have grudging admiration for Salmond and Sturgeon though. As much as I don't agree with their politics they are very good politicians.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 09:52

But if Salmond loses his seat tomorrow it will make my year!!

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:56

I voted labour, I voted SNP before.

If the tories get back in and god help us, going by so many of the threads on here, the daily mail has really done a number on people, they'll get in again, I'm voting for independence in the next indyref.

I can't take 5 more years of May's right wing government.

Beebeeeight · 08/06/2017 09:59

I see Tory staffers are hard at work on this thread!

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:59

they've been hard at work for a few weeks on on MN

Leaderwithsoul · 08/06/2017 10:02

I agree with you ssd

ssd · 08/06/2017 10:05

I've given up on here, the amount of lies I've read here the last few days is doing my head in....I honestly dont know how politicians do it, they must have skin like leather.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 10:06

Most people on this thread have been around since the indyref threads so you're kidding yourself if you think real people will not be voting Tory.

MacarenaFerreiro · 08/06/2017 10:07

Well the bookies have Jo Swinson ahead of John Nicolson in my constituency so hopefully by this time tomorrow the delightful Mr Nicolson will be looking for another job.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 10:08

I contributed to Jo Swinson's campaign, so i really hope so!

trixymalixy · 08/06/2017 10:09

And if you want to blame anyone for the rise in the Tory vote in Scotland then you can blame Sturgeon and the SNP. It wouldn't be happening if they were not constantly trying to railroad through another indyref against the wishes of the majority.

NoLotteryWinYet · 08/06/2017 10:10

paid for waffling on mumsnet? That'd be a dream! I've loved talking about politics since I was 10 and never voted conservative before. I'm clutching on with both hands to a labour party membership in the hope that we get a better labour manifesto next time. And I should be doing my boring IT job :)
