Moving back home to Edinburgh

We've (me and DP) recently decided to move back to Edinburgh after ten years away. We've got lots of family and friends there, don't know why we've stayed away so long!

I'm dreading the job hunt (am crap at interviews), packing and moving etc, but I am very excited at the thought of living there again. Hopefully one of us will get a job soon so we can move, we are preparing for it to take a wee while though. Not sure where we will be looking to live, I'd like to be near to family in Corstorphine/Blackhall, while DP quite likes the thought of living by the sea in Portobello.
I name changed for this because I know a few real life pals are on here and we don't want to say too much about our plans until we know when we'll be moving. So I thought I would share my excitement with strangers on the internet! And hopefully there are some other Edinburgers on here who can reassure me that it's not just my rose-tinted specs, it really is the best place in the world to live! Oh, and if anyone's got any tips for getting through the whole job hunting/relocation process, I'm all ears!

I love living on Edinburgh. We live in Corstorphine, so near trams, buses, trains and the airport. My children are at high school and doing well. I always thought I would end up in Craiglockhart lol.

I'm a Weegie who moved here 20 years ago and it can still take my breath away, walking down onto Princes St at lunchtime and seeing the castle, or getting the bus home past Arthur's Seat. I'd go for Porty myself: seaside on top of everything else is just the icing on the cake.

You could also think about Silverknowes/Cramond if you'd like to be near a beach, although the former is right on the flight path & both are very suburban.

You lucky caaaaah!! went to Uni there and stayed on for a few more years. Still one of my most fav cities in the world, so so beautiful, friendly, lots to do both for adults and kids, easy to get to beach and countryside, and compact enough to get around easily, such a great city to just walk and look at the gorgeous buildings!

No real advice, just wanted to applaud your decision to move back - I think it must have one of the highest "quality of life" ratings in the U.K. If not europe. Enjoy!!

Yes, still wonderful after 22 years! Am in South Queensferry now after being in town (all over the place) for many years. You won't regret!

Haste ye back, OP! I'm from the south of England originally, but I've lived here about 20 years (yikes) and I wouldn't live anywhere else. Your DP has impeccable taste, because Portobello is the best part of the best city in the world. It's worth putting up with the dreaded job interviews if you get to return here. Not knowing what work you're in I don't think I can be much help in the job hunting, but as far as relocation goes, yes it can be hell (I did it as an SP with two young children) but luckily once you're up here it's likely to be your last move as there can be no better place in which to live.

Did I mention I'm rather fond of the place?

Thanks everyone! I submitted my first Edinburgh job application the other night so fingers crossed! DP so far not persuaded by my argument that we should just up sticks and find jobs when we get there...

RedNails (love your user name!) I also went to Uni there but was lured away for work and part of me wishes I'd never left. It's not where I grew up but it feels like home to me. And hopefully will be home before too long! Can't wait!

I'm shamelessly bumping my own ancient thread to say that after two and a half loooooong years of dreaming of life in Edinburgh while fussily job hunting and dealing with life's general ups and downs, the stars have aligned and we are moving there next month!
To say I am excited is an understatement! Not least because there are now a couple of wee people there (our nieces!) who we can't wait to spend more time with.

I'm making an autumn/winter bucket list a mile long so tell me all your favourite places that I might not have heard about as I've been away for 12 years!
And sorry for resurrecting a zombie thread, but hope you will forgive me for updating about our happy new beginning!

Thank you! We're renting a flat in the city centre (in Tollcross, quite near the canal) for now and will be looking to buy a place further out come the spring. Whereabouts further out is still the subject of much discussion!
