Moving to Glasgow - thinking about Cardonald / Crookston

Hello,
Yet another post about moving a family to Glasgow I'm afraid!
We have two preschoolers and are moving to Glasgow from England this summer. We've seen a few houses in the Cardonald / Crookston area in our price range, I'd really appreciate any thoughts on whether this is a sensible area to be looking at. What are the primary schools like? Is it a good area for families?

What made you want to move to either of those places? Are they close to work?

They're sensible enough areas but wouldn't be my first choices.

Just that some houses came up that look ok and that we can afford! We're looking for a house with a garden, reasonable travel time into the city centre and a decent school. We were looking more around Shawlands and surrounding areas, but there hasn't been much on the market.

Quite suburban, if that's what you like, and good schooling.

(I can't really talk as I had a very happy upbringing in Bearsden/Milngavie which is the Northside equivalent )

Personally, I'd look at Shawlands, Langside, Newlands and some of Pollokshields. Shawlands is vibrant and there are also good schools (if you look beyond the snobbery that assumes that all the good schools are in East Ren )

Agree with prettybird but Shawlands is mostly flats no gardens.

There are houses with gardens in High Shawlands and Strathbungo, as well as Newlands, Langside and Pollokshields. But I agree: you need to look for them.

If you're prepared to consider conversions, you'll gave more choice. We're in a conversion in Pollokshields; dh calls it a horizontal semi (the upper half of a Victorian villa). Beautiful big garden (shared front garden; back garden is technically split left and right) and lovely quiet street. Downstairs neighbours (ie the other half of the house) gave two boys, one a couple of years younger than ds and the other 7 or 8 years younger. It was very reassuring when you heard door-slamming and the occasional shouting!

Great bus and train routes for city centre. Good local shops and parks. Really easy to get to science centre / ssec / riverside complex. Decent schools. Good mix of houses and friendly community. Loads going on in Bellahouston and also home to the climbing centre. Doesn't have the overconjested feel of the Shawlands / Pollockshields / Newlands. Direct bus route to QEUH (hospital) and the West End of Glasgow (Glasgow Uni and museums / trendy stuff etc). I would recommend Cardonald / Crookston.

Cardonald is good as are the other areas mentioned. With Cardonald you have the advantage for drivers of the Clyde Tunnel as an optional additional way into the city as well as the Kingston Bridge and old King George V Bridge choices. Public transport is good in all the areas mentioned.

I live near this area and it's good value - good transport links and I think it'll increase in value with the big hospital being nearby. It's much cheaper than Shawlanss etc - you could get a 4 bed detached house with a garden for under £250k last time I looked.

Most of my friends/colleagues live in the West End so don't know anywhere outside it exists. 😬
