Kilt in a hot climate

Dh's brother is getting married in Vietnam in May this year. Dh would like to wear his kilt (and new sil is also very keen) but he is worried that it will be ridiculously hot. It will be 25-30 C and humid. He has a wool kilt and a prince Charlie waistcoat and jacket. So will have 3 layers on top. He had thought about a ghille type shirt but he really doesn't like them. Anybody worn a kilt to a tropical wedding, any advice?

I wore a kilt to school every day in a hot climate for 12 years (those Scottish expats have a lot to answer for).

At 25C it is OK, but at 30 it is awful. Hot, and itchy. When the temp went above 30C we were allowed not to wear one. Some of us had fake kilts made out of cotton to wear when it got hot.

Make sure he takes a change of clothes in case he really decides he needs to change.

Dh wore a kilt when we got married in Kenya. Safe to say he was hot but he coped!

Is it very formal? Could he get away with a Ghillie shirt instead? Or perhaps have one to change into after the formalities?

Will it be primarily outside or inside? Inside should be air conditioned, so therefore tolerable.

Even if he's not keen on a gillie shirt, maybe take one to change into for outside/hot circumstances.

He doesn't NEED to wear a waistcoat, even with a Prince Charlie jacket (wear a belt instead), so he doesn't have to suffer 3 layers.

The kilt itself is not the problem due to the ahem added ventilation

It really is too hot and heavy with the waistcoat and PC jacket. Ghillie shirt is the only way to go.

Dh has worn his full formal kilt outfit in summer in South Africa and Australia (high humidity): he'd wear the full outfit to start, for effect, and then take off the jacket.

Do you own one? If not ask the hire company for a summer weight kilt. DH has both in his tartan.

It will depend how long you are outdoors for.

Dos he generally tolerate heat well? 25 and humid is manageable but above that with humidity and he might pass out! Not ideal. He will be pouring with sweat as well and bright red. Not a good look. You would probably need a few shirts/underwear/socks to wear as he will likely get a bit smelly too. Personally I wouldn't want my sh to wear the full get up in those conditions.

Thanks for all the replies. He already has the kilt, however it is also a bit tight as he has put on weight so that will not help with the heat! He is peely wally white , well almost blue, (and ginger)and doesn't cope well with the heat. I think you are right and that the red, hot sweaty look is not good. I think he will have to go with the ghillie shirt whether he likes it or not. I'm not sure if the wedding is inside or outside, I'll have to ask.

Dh took his jacket off for some of the photos but in a lot of them he had it on. P.s. you don't wear underwear with a kilt

We are not really tanned btw, must be the lighting.

He doesn't have to do the ghilli shirt, just wear his wing collar and bow tie (if that's what he normally wears) without the waistcoat and jacket.

Hot weather means everything is hot & sweaty so underwear will be essential.
Wld def go ghillie shirt instead of waistcoat etc.

Men in kilts should be going commando, not wearing pants -it's the law!

I'm not a fan of ghillie shirts either tbh - especially for a formal occasion. Why would you dress as a servant on a special day?

Yep, DH wore full prince Charlie when we got married here in Caribbean. His kilt weighed more than my wedding dress.
He wanted to go full tradition - it was 107oF the day we married and we were both sweating like beasts. But the. We got really drunk and stopped caring 😁

Yeah I know a real Scot doesn't wear pants but heat and humidity is gonna cause serious swamp ass and a pair of pants is better than a damp stinking kilt!

Dh and rest of our party wore full shebang at our Caribbean wedding. It was actually me in my dress who nearly fainted though be warned!
