Weekend in Glasgow

Dh and I are celebrating our 1st anniversary next weekend. Staying at the Hilton on Willian street, has anyone any suggestions of where to eat/nice bars etc. We're planning on Christmas shopping during the day on the Saturday and possibly the cinema, although dh not too keen on that idea possibly because he knows I just want to drool over Daniel Craig
I kinda fancy a nice afternoon tea or something.. I dunno, something that we can look back on.

The Hilton is a little bit out of the way and not the prettiest of walks into the shopping areas. But last time I was there, the service was great and the spa lovely (was a while ago - I live in Glasgow so don't have the need to stay! )

Brian Maule at the Chardon d'Or would be a special place for dinner and is a short walk from the Hilton.

How about tea in one of Willow Tea Rooms as somewhere a bit special/different? The Grand Central Hotel also does champagne cream teas. Not had tea at either so can't make a personal recommendation - but they look nice. Have a look at 5pm.co.uk or Groupon for deals/suggestions.

I have been looking at the Willow tea rooms. The menu looks lovely. Great idea re groupon. I don't know why I never thought about it. Not that worried about the walk, I had read that on trip advisor anyway, thanks though. I'm planning on booking us a wee massage or something so good to know the spa is nice. Thanks for replying

I can recommend the Grand Central Champagne Bar.

I have stayed in that Hilton; it was a lovely experience. We had a very nice afternoon tea in the hotel.

If you like steak then the Alston Bar and Beef is at Central Station and gets rave reviews.

For nice drinks the Grand Central is a good shout as is Gin71 further up Hope St from Central Station. Both are handy for the Hilton as well.

Hilton William St is quite handy for both City Centre and West End. Enjoy your weekend!!!

I would recommend Blythswood Hotel for afternoon tea

I like the Pig & Butterfly for afternoon tea; it's not formal, but is a bit quirky & has generous servings unlike the Blythswood

we had a lovely lunch in the Willow Tea Rooms, and I also fancied their breakfast offering of Porridge with Whisky....but we went elsewhere for breakfast.

29 in Royal Exchange Square is lovely for afternoon tea and really handy for shops on Buchanan Street. Have also heard good things about Alston Bar and Beef and it's on my to do list.

If you fancy a drink with a bit of a buzz head to Merchant Square in the Merchant City. Just a short hop from the shops and plenty of bar choices with 'outdoor' seating inside. Lots of nice restaurants dotted around Candleriggs area too. There's usually a craft fair in the square at the weekends so can do a bit of shopping, drinking and people watching under one roof!

From the Hilton you can either go into City centre or west within 5 minute walk or so.

Finnieston is great these days, it's towards the west, some great restaurants and bars (Kelvingrove Cafe for drinks, the Gannet, The Finnieston, Porter and Rye, the Scullery is just lovely for food and some drinks too).

The walk into town from the Hilton has actually got a lot better in the last few weeks as the new building over the road opened with a new path up to St Vincent Street, then turn right and walk straight along St V Street and you'll find yourself on Buchanan Street.

Places in the City that are good for eating and drinking are Anchor Line, Cafe Gandolfi (a must! It's a Merchant City institution), oh there's loads these days!

Had a look at Cafe Gandolfi, it looks brilliant. I've just informed dh that's where we are going for breakfast on the Sunday.

I agree that Cafe Gandolfi is great. You would be best to book though as it is very popular. I can recommend Hotel du Vin for afternoon tea.

Would agree with all the suggestions on here & add a few more. Hutchesons in the merchant city has a fab steak & fish restaurant. If you are at the Hilton you are very near the Finnieston strip on Argylle St where there are a lot of new bar/ restaurant places The Gannet is very very good. Gin71 is great & if you go I can recommend the gin flights particularly the gin fizz flight.

YY to booking Gandolfi, even for breakfast it's busy.

I love Gandolfi. I think I might call in today for some Cullin Skink from Gandolfi To Go when I'm passing

We're here! Just had a wee drink in the bar, now dh is in the shower and I'm drinking champagne watching Children in need.
Not sure where we are going for dinner yet, definitely going to the willow tea rooms for afternoon tea tomorrow and having breakfast at cafe Gandolfi on Sunday (our actual anniversary) Thanks to you all for your suggestions!

For the best view the John Lewis restaurant/cafe has a window all the way down Buchanan st, but the prices are shocking for mediocre food/drinks.

Princess square indoor shopping centre at the bottom of Buchanan st is the prettiest shopping centre in the uk.

Ashton lane in the west end is where the hipsters go for the bars and the grieve or cinema where you can take a pint in with you!

That should be 'grosvenor'
