There's going to be 16 council by-elections across Scotland!

16 of our new MPs are current councillors, meaning there'll be lots of by-elections coming up, all across the country.

So much for a rest from politics!

It's fairly Scotland-wide: from the highlands to Lanarkshire and Ayrshire, Edinburgh and Fife to Glasgow to Aberdeen.

We won't get a rest from politics for a fair while!
Next year is the Scottish election, then the EU referendum is likely to be 2017, not sure what'll happen in 2018 but 2019 is the European election and then its the general election again!

Jackieharris · 09/05/2015 14:12

The full council election is also in 2017.

Do you think they will all stand down from councils? We have an MP who is also a councillor and there have been suggestions that they will do both.

But yes, the election/referendum calendar keeps on rolling. I can't quite believe we are facing the EU Referendum.

Jackieharris · 10/05/2015 10:04

Afaik the SNP have a policy of no 'double roles' so yes.

There'll also be a by election for Alex salmond's msp seat.

There's no reason why they wouldn't resign those posts. If they don't they'll be attacked politically for it. Ns will want them all concentrating on wm. the party don't want the council voters to feel abandoned and unrepresented.

Also they are riding such a wave they would probably win most of them (would have to look into this though as its complicated because of multi member wards) so would then have even more SNP elected members.

There'll be no 'ordinary' party members left!

You'll be pleased to know that 2018 is an "off" year for elections! Grin

unless of course England votes to leave and Scotland votes to stay in the 2017 EU referendum, in which case there might be another Indyref Wink

AgentProvocateur · 10/05/2015 14:27

2018 is a world cup year, so football instead of politics Wink

prettybird · 10/05/2015 14:47

....the joys HmmHmm

think I'd prefer politics Wink

OOAOML · 10/05/2015 14:57

I can just about cope with that much politics but football as well is too much Wink

On the plus side my husband and I will almost certainly be voting the same way in the EU Referendum! Complete rarity for us these days.

Do you have a link to which councils it will be?

Jackieharris · 11/05/2015 18:04

There isn't one link to the info, you'd have to go and look up each of the candidates and see where they represented but afaik

2 are in Glasgow City council
1 in highland
1 in Fife (rosyth)
2 in Aberdeen city
2 in Falkirk
1 in North Lanarkshire
1 in South Lanarkshire (Hamilton)
1 in Renfrewshire
1 in Edinburgh (leith walk)
1 in East Ayrshire
1 in Stirling
1 in North Ayrshire
1 in South Ayrshire
