Politics again, pathetic behaviour Glasgow City Centre

here

It's not being reported who is behind it but it certainly looks the same as some of the incidents during the Indy campaign.

Whoever/whatever, it's ridiculous to behave like that IMO.

According to the Herald, it's a former SNP member who went to school and uni with Jim Murphy, and was tipped off by unhappy local Labour party members. (The headline doesn't quite fit with the text of the story - no surprise there!)

Ridiculous behaviour, agree.

Behooven · 04/05/2015 15:41

I googled Sean Clerkin (named as the main protagonist)

There's several references to him. The Scotsman has an article where he is demanding an immigration cap (not very progressive). There's also this article from last years stramash.

Christ, I'm getting so fed up with this election. And I say that as someone with a strong interest in politics and its effects. I can't stand Jim Murphy, but Nicola Sturgeon should have a word - she's been pretty dignified and mature throughout this campaign. Most SNP campaigners I've encountered have been fine, though I did get stopped by some at the bus stop outside Sainsbury's on Woodlands Rd yesterday and I asked who I'd be voting for. I said Green and the SNP guy took me aside, very conspiratorily, and said 'you have to vote SNP this year because it's FPTP. Then you can vote Green next time. Your Green candidate would say the same.'

I was all 'aye, I'll think on, pal,' whilst wondering who changes their vote based on some guy at a bus stop Grin

Behooven · 04/05/2015 15:57

Grin. Some of the best advice comes from people at bus stops!

OP posts:
Behooven · 04/05/2015 15:57

But not that obviously...

Right enough, Behooven Grin But not that bus stop, that's the meeting point for many a chap who's had a long afternoon session in the Arlington Bar and has been arguing with the guy at the crepe van over why he can't just have a roll.

OllyBJolly · 04/05/2015 16:18

A crepe van?

Trendy west enders!

tribpot · 04/05/2015 16:19

A friend of mine was there and says there were far more people watching than were involved in the confrontation (this photo has circulated on Facebook) and thinks it may have been stage managed.

SirChenjin · 04/05/2015 16:20

Agree - it's a bloody disgrace. Regardless of who tipped off whom (if you believe the conspiracy theories) Nicola needs to stamp on this behaviour - she's letting far too many of them away with this by not making it clear that they do not speak for the SNP and she needs to publicly disassociate herself from them (and the quisling/put the nut on No voters/Celtic scum/and so on and on..). She seems very reluctant to do that.

On a more serious note - this sort of behaviour really, really doesn't encourage people to go into politics. Would you put yourself through this sort of abuse? I know I wouldn't.

Behooven · 04/05/2015 16:21

I don't believe that for a minute.

OP posts:
Behooven · 04/05/2015 16:22

That was to trib Blush

OP posts:
tribpot · 04/05/2015 16:24

Which bit don't you believe, Behooven?

Behooven · 04/05/2015 16:24

Stage managed/set up etc

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 04/05/2015 16:24

That photo has been circulated widely by the nationalist supporters, yes.

I made the mistake of going onto Jim Murphy's FB page earlier to see what his supporters were saying about it. Have a look - it is full of nationalist bile and vitriol of the worst sort. Go over to Nicola's - full of the same supporters worshipping at her feet. Pathetic.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/05/2015 16:25

There was a story in the Telegraph a couple of weeks back, about two SNP activists 'hunting down' (their words) Margaret Curran when she was going door to door canvassing - they yelled abuse and heckled her and the people she was talking to, and boasted about it afterwards.

The SNP candidate for that constituency issued a mild rebuke, but stated that she thought Margaret Curran was 'a fair target for community justice' - which sounds somewhat threatening to me. I think Nicola Sturgeon should expel the activists and censure the candidate.

tribpot · 04/05/2015 16:29

I have no view on whether it was or not, this was his feeling from having been there - but he isn't suggesting that he knows it was or anything. It appeared to him to be a rather minor fracas (if we use that word for non-Clarkson incidents these days).

SirChenjin · 04/05/2015 16:31

That sounds about right SDTG. The 20 year old candidate who tweeted about Celtic scum and putting the nut on No voters has been spoken to, as has the candidate who threw accusations of quisling the same way. The ones who burnt the Smith report have been reinstated to key roles. Hardly the actions of a party determined to stamp out the worst of this behaviour.

Behooven · 04/05/2015 16:33

Won't happen SDT
Wasn't one of the SNP candidates spouting ageist comments and another referring to rangers fans in sectarian terminology recently too. I know there are bad yins on all 'sides' but it just seems that SNP = allowed to say anything they like/behave how they like and it's acceptable.

If UKIP had organised a protest like todays at a Wee Nicola rally, there would have been hell let loose.

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 04/05/2015 16:40

Yes - that was the same candidate who wanted to put the nut on all No voters who tweeted about Celtic scum. Edinburgh South's SNP candidate who called No voters quislings also said “umpteen poor souls in the elderly bracket can vote but barely know their own name”.

Neither have been sacked. Both apologised but remain in place. I agree - there are bad apples on both sides, but there seems to be a heck of a lot more tolerance for the nationalists who behave that way. Nicola could take a much tougher and less forgiving stance.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 04/05/2015 16:44

Are the webcams for George Square switched on? They are run by Glasgow City Council, and always switched off if what is shown doesn't suit them.

If they were off, it's a set up for certain.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 04/05/2015 16:52

SirChenjin my local Labour councillor tweeted that all No supporters were 'rats' after IndyRef, when over 50% of the town he was elected to represent voted Yes.

He has not apologised, and is still taking our money, and we cannot vote him out until 2016.

So I would disagree it is all the Nationalists who make offensive comments and get away with it.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 04/05/2015 16:53

Sorry, he tweeted all Yes supporters were rats.

Not acceptable, no matter who it's directed at.

SirChenjin · 04/05/2015 17:01

Is Jim Docherty still standing as a candidate in the forthcoming elections? I didn't say it's the nationalists who are making offensive comments - but there seems to be far more coming from the Yes side, and they seem to be very aggressive. 55% of Scottish people are enemy collaborators - and the man isn't shown the door??

SirChenjin · 04/05/2015 17:03

But agree - no-one should be calling anyone 'rats', it's not acceptable.

Behooven · 04/05/2015 17:10

Coffee, I'm not certain but that doesn't look like George Square to me?
