England is around 20 July to 1 Sept (generally, does vary a bit by area). Scotland is earlier - v early July to about 18 August. I’ve no idea about the many other countries Europe I’m afraid. June probably safest.

I live in my Spain and my children finish school in the 3rd week of June, and go back towards the 2nd week of September. They get around 11 weeks holiday.

Gazelda · 25/09/2022 21:32

South of England is usually mid July to first week of Sept. I know other areas of the UK are different.
That's state schools, independents seem to finish earlier.
And European countries will be different too.

PolkaDotMankini · 25/09/2022 21:32

In my part of England schools break up on 22nd July. Schools break up earlier in Scotland and in continental Europe.

feckoffbrian · 25/09/2022 21:36

In Switzerland, we roughly break up end of June (regional variations apply)

In Germany it depends on the Bundesland since school holidays are staggered to ease the pressure on holiday accommodation. Nordrhein-Westfalen general starts the earliest (in mid-June) and Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg is the last to go back (in mid-September).

In my area of Scotland school summer holidays in 2023 are from June 29th-15th August

sourgreenplums · 25/09/2022 22:15

Italian children break up during the first week of June and go back around 15th September.

LesleyA · 25/09/2022 22:32

Sourgreenplums 3 and a half months holiday?

Thank you everyone for your input. Might it have been better for me to write when is the best time in the summer to visit London? I’m restricted to between 23 June and 18 July

The earlier the better but it'll be busy in any case.

The UK holidays don't make a huge difference to the amount of people in london but travel and attractions might not be quite as busy and expensive.

Generally speaking we've had better weather early summer too.

Where are you traveling from?

NeedingCoffee · 26/09/2022 08:37

As BackT says, British holidays won’t materially impact London sights, but your June dates are likely the best bet.

reluctantbrit · 26/09/2022 21:32

i would go for June as you avoid the English school holidays. But, tourist season in London starts in April and runs until October in a way. I work near St Paul’s and after two years with not a lot of tourists, they are back in full swing including foreign school trips. I look forward to having the pavement back to myself.

Grmany - as PP said, holiday season runs from June to September and you have lots of Germans having holidays there as well, so you have the northern states coming to Bavaria or later the southern ones going to the Baltic Sea.

They vary slightly by country, and privates schools have longer holidays butnin general the dates are here (and also on any other school website)
