‘Dis’-honesty box - WWYD

I have pet ducks and have been selling the surplus eggs from an honesty box at the end of the drive. I only have four ducks laying so it’s usually only one box every couple of days. I charge £2.50 for half a dozen which is the going rate for duck eggs round here and pays for their food. Recently the eggs have frequently been taken without being paid for - I have no idea who’s doing this (I suspect it’s the same person). WWYD? I was thinking about putting a note in the box asking people to come up to the house if they want eggs but not sure if that’s a good idea?

It’s such a shame that someone can ruin it for others.

I would stop the box for a while and leave the sign - as you say.

You'll only get genuine, honest buyers then.

It would be a nuisance to have people coming to the house but better than losing the eggs to a thief for no money. Give it a try.

Honesty boxes rely on people being honest….there is always someone who just helps themselves. Get them to knock on the door if they want to buy.

Could you put a camera in the box? Might deter them.

JacknDiane · 09/05/2026 07:47

They'd steal the camera too

Honestly, I would be so temped to hide a Ring doorbell or something and yell at them when they come to steal your eggs! Grin

RandomMess · 09/05/2026 07:49

Put a sign up about the egg theft and move the box nearer the house where you can mock up a camera monitoring it.

I’ve seen other people with those little cake shed things have a ring doorbell camera. But I think it would need to be able to pickup a WiFi signal to work.

The only time I've seen an honesty box was when on holiday in Scotland and there was a loud barking dog that watched over the fruit in the shed - enough to put anyone off nicking anything imho!
