Moving to North Norfolk

champagnediva · 07/04/2026 20:20

Good afternoon

We are moving to Norfolk from The Wirral, north west England. Our house is under offer. We have some friends who live in Thorpe Market. We like Cromer, Holt, Mundesley.

It is a huge step, wondering if we should rent say for 3 months or just buy.
I will be retiring next year, so we are not bothered about employment or schools.
I am quite outgoing/friendly. Love walking/yoga and pilates.
Just wish I could find a site where people have done same as us. Wirral is too crowded, full of houses but great culture scene with Liverpool with all the theatres.
We do have a dog and we love animals.
Any suggestions on areas, please xx. PS we need a Kirsty and Phil x

Wirral isn't crowded. Where about are you? There's loads of green space.

We are in Cheshire, Little Neston, it all depends on what you want in life, has to be a balance.

I mean, you're free to move where you like but to describe Little Neston as "too crowded, full of houses and so populated" is just ridiculous 😄

What sort of budget?

Really depends on location £350/£400.

Good luck with your move. We are in a similar position. We're in our early 50s but with two teenage daughters. I know Norfolk very well, having grown up just outside Swaffham and been a very regular visitor to North Norfolk over the last 6 years as we have a static caravan near Cromer. We currently live just outside London but have lived in central London and Surrey and feel we are ready to come 'home'. I have a great network of friends where we live now and I am very involved in community life and would really miss that if I couldn't find it when we move. We are considering Wymondham, Aylsham and North Walsham as potential towns (Holt feels a little too 'chocolate boxy' for us, although we do love it). Our daughters are up for the move but it is a big step. We'd be looking to do it in a couple of years and so are thinking about schools and colleges. Very torn and lots to think about but good luck to you for having the courage to make the move!

Help needed
Good morning Our house is under offer and our purchaser's are keen to exchange and complete within next month. Our future house has fallen through in Holt.
We are desperate to find somewhere short term, reasonable holiday let or even full blown rental. We are based on the Wirral and it takes 6/7hrs to get to Norfolk.
We will be homeless soon.
Does anybody have any tips? My husband is going down on Wednesday to have a look at two but they also might be gone by the time he gets down there. Currently, rentals are getting snapped up within 2 days!!!
Thank you

Stay put, don't sell until you have somewhere to go. Seriously.

lljkk · 20/06/2026 11:12

Becoming chain free could reduce your stress a lot .

Holt is one of the more expensive areas on that coast, but I guess you know that. Did you actually find pilates & yoga there?

You have 2 cars so very mobile. Find a place to rent within 10 miles of Holt/Cromer/Aylsham/North Walsham, rentals in little villages won't move fast. That said, In London, people sometimes commit to rent without viewing, that's how hot their rental market can be, too.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 20/06/2026 11:27

If your house is sold I'd move into a rental on the Wirral to stop the sale from falling through. Then you'd be a cash buyer and could move quickly when you find something in Norfolk.

Holt has all the facilities we like/need. We are not looking to rent in Holt. More expensive and lack of parking. We are looking in small villages but anything half decent and within our budget is snapped up after two days. We thought about holiday let for two weeks and look for somewhere to rent but schools break up soon and they are fully booked. I really wish for this sale to go through. Sales very slow in our area.

I live in a small village with train services into Norwich and gt Yarmouth both 15 mins. I never go to Great Yarmouth but city access is great. I can drive to the coast and broads in 10-20 mins. We are very rural with great walks. I like to visit the coast and the city but don’t want to live in either. I would rent for a while before choosing.

northernerinsomerset · 20/06/2026 16:42

I’m don’t live in Norfolk but visit my son there a lot. From the places we’ve been to in Norfolk,Norwich or Downham Market seem really nice,Norwich obviously has everything,Downham Market is smaller, but seems to have everything and also a good rail service.

Renting long term is so expensive. We have decided where we wish to be. Just now need to find right house and the way things are going the right and immediate rental. Our house is under offer. We thought we had found dream home but when we had survey/septic tank report and EICR it was a nightmare and far too costly. We now need to pull out. So stressful.

Could you rent a static caravan temporarily while you house hunt?

lljkk · 21/06/2026 08:40

Not suggesting you rent long term, just plan to rent right after present house sells to get yourself chain free & while still house hunting for somewhere you like best. Rent near the area you want to live so that viewings are much easier.

I searched for rental properties within 15 miles of Holt.
This bungalow in BMkt was listed for rent almost 2 months ago, has parking.

Listed a month ago, 3 bedrms, near Briston, has parking. I consider Briston a dump btw, but it's not unsafe, just so dull, parochial, UKIPerville.

Check out this 3 bedroom bungalow for rent on Rightmove

3 bedroom bungalow for rent in Crofts Close, Burnham Market, PE31 for £1,150 pcm. Marketed by OpenRent, London

The hot weather has made everyone head for the coast.

Rhubarbsoap · 21/06/2026 21:58

I’ve just been on air bnb and there are loads of places available for a 2week hire.
ranging from a Double bedroom to a small cottage or static. Get on there and look!

Rhubarbsoap · 21/06/2026 22:01

Various static caravans in Stalham for 2 weeks £1,200.
or small cottage in Corpusty for £1,800
for 3 weeks.

It's a good idea but we were trying to avoid the Wirral if we are in Norfolk we are on the spot for house viewing. We would probably end up being there for about 3 months.

You bung all your stuff into storage, pack a suitcase or two and move about. Treat it as an adventure and get to know the area. Is there anyone who would have the dog for a few weeks/ months (we had our DS’s when he was in a similar situation)?

Once you have found somewhere and put your offer in, can you go on holiday for a month overseas?

You’ve got to look at the situation with an open mind - it will all be over by Xmas.

Are you more likely to get a short term cheaper rental on the Wirral? You could look for a rental down in Norfolk when the holiday season is over in September.

In the current climate I'd prioritise making sure your house sale goes through.

I feel time is running out. Our buyers are keen to move asap. However, we can't be homeless. If we lose our buyers, we might be stuck here for another 18 months, groan, groan. They are not selling and being vastly reduced.

OP posts:
Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 22/06/2026 15:57

Exactly, so sell your home and get cash in the bank and get a rental quickly where you live so you're not homeless. Then look for a rental in 3 months time down in Norfolk. You seem to be in hurry, is there any reason for that? I know it's a pain to move twice or even three times but you can leave a lot of your stuff packed in boxes (been there done that!).

Tabarnak · 22/06/2026 16:19

OP - have you looked at rentals in Fakenham? Fakenham is less beloved by the holiday market than other towns.
