Lancaster Royal Grammar School & living rurally

Hi all, we're looking at relocating to the Lancaster area from the South East to be closer to family and to have a more outdoor way of life. Would be hoping for DS to go to Lancaster Royal Grammar School. Is there anyone here who lives in a village in the Grammar catchment with children at the Grammar schools? Do they travel by public bus? How reliable is it? Do they feel isolated from friends from school who mostly live in Lancaster/Morecambe/Preston? Do you often drive them to meet up with friends? Do you feel there is enough for them to get involved in outside of school in the area/ enough to keep them busy? If anyone is willing to share their experience of living in a village like Halton, Hornby, Wray, Melling or Nether/Over Kellet etc with children at the Grammar school, it would be so helpful. Thanks!

I can’t help with your specific queries but my DH’s friends went to Lancaster Grammar but
lived in Kendal and got a bus from there . As someone who grew up rurally and went to a grammar school a half hour bus ride away yes I felt really isolated as a teenager, there were few buses and my parents would not drive me around so I missed out on so much socialising. I have raised my own children in a small seaside village but with a train station and 15-30 min service to a nearby city. I made this choice based on my own experience and have been pleased with their friendships, participation in sports and activities I missed out on

What does your family say ? Do they have any experience ?

Quernmore is a short bus ride from the grammar school, but feels tucked away and is quiet with beautiful landscapes and views. Bus services for Halton and Nether/ Over Kellet are pretty good, though quieten down in the evening so probably a mix of public transport and lifts would sort his social life in those locations.

Halton would be fine but it’s not a village in the sense that Nether Kellett is. You’re not really saying what you want from this “village”.

Have you looked at Forton, Quernmore, Dolphinholme? All much easier for travel to the grammar and into Lancaster
