North Yorkshire - where to go?

Hi we live in Reading currently, we want to move to North Yorkshire.

My partners family live in Ampleforth and Middlesbrough. We like the idea of village life but we have two boys, so we need somewhere with schools. I work in the nhs so I would like to be close to a hospital if possible.

Anyone have recommendations?

If you want to be near York hospital, there are some lovely villages north of York between York and Helmsley. These would be in catchment for Easingwold School and Ryedale, if you are looking at state secondaries. It’s a beautiful part of the country.

Ripon?

Ripon is lovely, we are going up in September and currently going to look at - Northallerton, Great Ayton, Malton. We are staying in Ripon and then onto ampleforth. Thank you for the suggestions, would welcome anymore or opinions on the villages stated.

Easingwold is close to Ampleforth and a super easy commute to York Hospital. It has an outstanding secondary in the town. Nearby villages are all lovely too - Alne, Tollerton, Sheriff Hutton, Sutton on the Forest etc.

One thing to look at is public transport. Not all the villages have a bus route and it depends how much you are willing to be taxi depending on the age of your boys. The main bus company around Easingwold is Reliance Buses - you can look up the routes they run to see which villages they go through.

Richmond has good schools and is a town with things to do.

Used to work there (decades ago) loved it.

Good to know, we visited and really likes the feel. Everyone was so friendly.

Another vote for Ripon.

Great schools (one is a grammar which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea), great GPs, community hospital, 2 miles from the A1, no train but trains from Thirsk are a 20 min drive away - in York in 1/4 an hour for work, tons of clubs for kids. About a mile’s walk to Fountains Abbey. Walkable centre with Booths, M&S, loads of independent shops, pubs and restaurants. Big community feel with plenty going on.

I don’t like Northallerton, it is a good service centre but lacks charm. The only thing that would draw me there would be the train service.

Easingwold, Malton and Thirsk are all nice too.

Richmond is nice, no trains and more affected by the weather than somewhere like Ripon or Thirsk, those 20 odd miles up the A1 make a big difference. I play a sport that moves around the county and Richmond has far more snow than Ripon most winters.
