Penicuik vs West Linton

Hi everyone,

just looking for opinions on west Linton versus Penicuik? We are thinking of moving up closer to Edinburgh from further down in the borders. Idea to be nearer Edinburgh, family near Livingston, other family coming through the airport and also to have easy access to more facilities for the kids like schools, clubs etc.
I like the idea of Penicuik, full of amenities, close to the hills, easy access to Edinburgh, though it is certainly not one of the prettiest towns. West Linton looks prettier but is much smaller and we would have to drive in and out of Penicuik to get to all the facilities, so seems like a pointless move, but it does look like a prettier village.
anyone have any thoughts, one versus the other?

thanks!!

West Linton is in the Borders and Penicuik is in Midlothian so catchment secondary schools are different if you have children.
Wes Linton is quieter and nearby Peebles is a nice market town which has all your amenities including swimming pool. The secondary school is there also.

House prices in West Linton are waaaay more than Penicuik. Two totally different places as you've said in your OP. WL has a small CoOp, pub, bookshop but that's pretty much it. Penicuik has a Tesco, Lidl and loads of other shops and eateries. If you want amenities and better transport links to Edinburgh then go for Penicuik. If you don't mind lack of amenities and poorer public transport but a gorgeous village feel (and a bigger mortgage!) then WL.

I'd say that the adults might prefer lovely West Linton but the children will be happier in Penicuik, particularly when they hit teenage years. West Linton is very pretty but not much for young people to do.
