Forest of Dean - Lydbrook

MrsG2017 · 08/01/2023 16:45

We are exploring the Forest of Dean and Lincoln shire as options for our move.

We've seen a lovely property in upper lydbrook and wondered if anyone has experience of the area? I noted it's about 35mins to the Gloucester Quays so I know if I get a pang for a bit of civilisation and commercialism it isn't too far away!

Thanks

We moved to the Forest last year and we absolutely love it, no regrets whatsoever. We're only a couple of miles from Lydbrook. I like Lydbrook, it has a little shop, a chippy, and a pub, with another pub in Lower Lydbrook. I'd be wary of lower Lydbrook btw, it's currently flooded!

Upper Lydbrook is really pretty, and nestled in a valley with steep forested hills either side. We looked at a couple of properties there - though some of the roads up the hills are very steep and narrow so I'd imagine you'd need a 4x4 in winter, although the main roads are fine. We get a lot of power cuts here too.

People joke about the Forest being 20 years behind, but that's exactly why we love it. There's a real sense of community, lots going on, and we have been made so welcome. Life is slower and easier. If you love walking, cycling and views then you're in for a treat. It's stunning, as is the Wye valley. There's loads of artists and crafts people here too if that's your thing. And everything is cheaper 👍

Whereabouts is the house? Happy to give more info and answer any questions 🙂

I know the area well, and it's lovely as thd pp said. If you send a property link, the pp or I may know it and be able to offer more advice. It really depends on what kind of lifestyle you are looking for. Do you have dc as I could also provide more info about schools, etc.

You're right that Gloucester Quays isn't far. Monmouth and Ross on Wye are also lovely small towns that are 15 to 20 minutes away. If you like cycling and walking, there are fabulous trails nearby, and of course, you are right on the River Wye from Lydbrook, too.

Not familiar with Lydbrook specifically but we moved into the Forest of Dean district in 2020 and absolutely love it. We are a bit closer to Gloucester (about 20 mins) but really feel like we get the best of both worlds. Rural living, beautiful scenery and small town community living - with shops, big supermarkets and city life a short drive away for all of the modern conveniences.

@csps2019 thank you
Where are you if you don't mind me asking?
