Smells from farm

Call me stupid but we bought a house a few months ago next to a dairy farm and the smell is horrific. I’d say 4 days out of a week it’s bad.

There is cow muck running down the lane into field next to our house, so we have to drive through it to get into our property and end up with stinky car inside and out.

We did lots of research before we bought, spoke with farmer, spoke with neighbour, drove past loads of times during all types of weather (mainly summer) as we had reservations about proximity to farm, but the smell wasn’t prevalent or close to the property. Maybe a little whiff down the Lane but nothing like this.

We expected a bit of a smell now and then, particularly when they are spreading and could put up with say 7 days out of the month it being a bit smelly, but not for the majority of the time.

Can we expect the smell to improve when the cows are put out to pasture in the spring? If we have to then we’ll speak with the farmer to resolve but if that doesn’t help, what constitutes a smell nuisance and who do you report to? I really don’t think I’m going to be able to settle here unless it gets better.

All advice welcome!

My lungs have just sailed gracefully from my mouth with laughter.

You're an idiot.

Please move back from where you came from. The countryside is not for you and we don’t want you in it. We are sick of townies spouting nonsense about smells, noisy sheep, tractors, mud, church bells, cockerels. Every month another bellend moves in and complains, and then they move out again.

100% this, and I don't even live in the countryside!

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 01/12/2022 10:33

Wait until they muck out the sheds when winter is over...

Pleaseaddcaffine · 01/12/2022 10:37

It's a farm I grew up on a farm... They smell. But honestly it's actual nice compared to a busy city road where your hair stinks (my opinion).
Please please do not speak to the farmer.. You will be a laughing stock for years!!!

Just what do you think the farmer can do to stop animals smelling :)
Id move if i was you.

Somanysocks · 01/12/2022 13:54

Free your nostrils and Febreze the countryside.🌸🌻🐂🌹🌺

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 01/12/2022 14:29

Op sounds like you might be better off in a rural town. Usually far enough away from the real countryside so that you don't get as much of the smells and noises but close enough to pop over and be respectful

I always think cities smell quite bad. It's all fumes, grot, grime and general stank. At least the countryside (usually) smells natural!

You'll get used to it. I love the smell as it remind me of amazing long warm summers at my families farm as a child

Me too. Same for stable yards, I love the smell of horses.

Excellent advice.

But looks like @DoAhhDiddy won't be back. A one-post wonder. Or resident under the bridge.

You may find the farmer has his own ideas about how to "resolve" the situation OP if you approach him.

Reminds me of a local farmer, years ago. Residents on new estate complained about his cows waking up too early and mooing ( how very dare they) He said he'd set their alarm clock for later ! Give me country smells every day. Maybe best you move away from rural area, back to town for you, all the lovely fumes there.

There’s even a smell of bullshit off of this thread.

DoAhhDiddy · 02/12/2022 21:24

Yes, there is excrement on the street. We stand in it having to open and close our gate when accessing our property. It’s on our cars and in the footwell of our cars. It’s fucking rank! It’s not from cows being walked, as I would expect them to crap. It’s from the sheds.

Re the smells, like I said when I posted, we expected it to smell, asked relevant questions, researched, constantly visited area to ‘sniff test’ etc etc. I think it might be the shit running onto the street. I can cope with muck spreading, and the usual type of farm smells as I grew up somewhere remote. This is fucking putrid hell. Like others have commented, I’m sure they cannot be following sound practices managing their waste.

Thanks to the useful and helpful responders, not so much to the snarky middle England know it alls!

Op. Farmers wife, not dairy, but muddy. Cattle and sheep.

Can you do a map? Giving you the benefit of the doubt, shit running onto a " street" next to a dairy farm I don't follow.

My car is filthy, blame the weather.

But a shed being hosed onto a street seems unlikely

It’s a Lane… it’s been a long week!

If this is a serious thread, why don’t you look at an electric gate so you don’t have to walk in the lane?

UrsulaPandress · 02/12/2022 21:48

So was there no shit on the street when you visited several times before you purchased?

This has to be a wind up. Utterly ridiculous.

Ponderingwindow · 02/12/2022 22:17

I suggest posting on whatever social media your neighbors are gathering upon. See if you can get them to support you in your quest to change the scents of the countryside.

Ralphswife · 05/12/2022 15:09

When I lived next to a dairy farm it wasn’t the smell that upset me, it was the sound of cows that had been separated from their calves that kept me awake at night. I had no idea - spoke to a local farmer at the school gate who assured me that they usually stop after a couple of days.

Irishfarmer · 05/12/2022 15:31

@DoAhhDiddy to be fair, there should not be slurry flowing down the road. Muck of all varieties can get onto the road from tractor tyres. But it sounds like their tanks are over flowing which is not good/ allowed.

TassLeHoff · 05/12/2022 16:12

Have you considered breaking into a biolab, nicking some foot and mouth bacteria and infecting his cattle?
