Smells from farm

DoAhhDiddy · 30/11/2022 20:53

Call me stupid but we bought a house a few months ago next to a dairy farm and the smell is horrific. I’d say 4 days out of a week it’s bad.

There is cow muck running down the lane into field next to our house, so we have to drive through it to get into our property and end up with stinky car inside and out.

We did lots of research before we bought, spoke with farmer, spoke with neighbour, drove past loads of times during all types of weather (mainly summer) as we had reservations about proximity to farm, but the smell wasn’t prevalent or close to the property. Maybe a little whiff down the Lane but nothing like this.

We expected a bit of a smell now and then, particularly when they are spreading and could put up with say 7 days out of the month it being a bit smelly, but not for the majority of the time.

Can we expect the smell to improve when the cows are put out to pasture in the spring? If we have to then we’ll speak with the farmer to resolve but if that doesn’t help, what constitutes a smell nuisance and who do you report to? I really don’t think I’m going to be able to settle here unless it gets better.

All advice welcome!

Well you have invited us to call you stupid…

How on earth do you expect the farmer to “resolve” this?!

Alexandernevermind · 30/11/2022 20:57

It will improve a little in the summer, although you will have the animals inside obviously a couple of times a day for milking. Silage won't be used as much during the summer, which will improve things. How close are you, as 5am is normal. You can't complain about a dairy farm smelling, you just have to get used to it.

starlightmagic · 30/11/2022 20:58

I suspect the farmer would give you a rather incredulous look, you did buy next to a farm in the countryside? It’s not going to be fragrant!

NewBootsAndRanty · 30/11/2022 21:00

What on earth do you expect the farmer to do??

ladydimitrescu · 30/11/2022 21:00

Who do you think you could possibly report the fact you moved next to a farm and are now annoyed it smells to?
What do you expect the farmer to do? Close up shop?
You learn to live with it or sell and move, those are your options op. There's literally nothing you can do.

prampushingdownthehighst · 30/11/2022 21:02

Get a load of corks and shove em up the cows arses
Cows smell, who knew?

girlmom21 · 30/11/2022 21:03

You're going to get laughed at if you report bad smells when you chose to buy by a farm.

minidancer · 30/11/2022 21:03

Wait for the flies in summer too

catandcoffee · 30/11/2022 21:04

Stupid.

Thats like buying a house next to a trainline and complaining of noise from trains 😂

upfucked · 30/11/2022 21:04

This is like the people who move next to churches and complain about bell ringing or the coast and the fog horn.

HollyJollyNovember · 30/11/2022 21:04

This cannot be real. You bought a house next to a dairy farm!!

OzziePopPop · 30/11/2022 21:05

Hahahaha 😂 😂 😂

LadyVictoriaSponge · 30/11/2022 21:06

minidancer · 30/11/2022 21:03

Wait for the flies in summer too

Was going to say the same.

Spenn · 30/11/2022 21:06

Is it a Bison farm?

DancingLedgend · 30/11/2022 21:06

Yes, things will be different when the cows are out again in the spring,
Some odd smelly days, when the cowsheds are scraped out, but nothing like housed animals in winter.
( but then again....flies)

Give yourselves a year to get used to it.
Then decide whether you can live with it.
If you can't- move. The farm is not going to cease just for you.

Hellocatshome · 30/11/2022 21:06

You can't report it as a smell nuisance. it's a farm and was there first.

Aquamarine1029 · 30/11/2022 21:07

If we have to then we’ll speak with the farmer to resolve

Right. I'm sure the farmer will dispatch all of his cows immediately for your comfort. Or maybe spray them with copious amounts of perfume.

sunshineandstrawberryjam · 30/11/2022 21:07

What on earth do you expect anyone to do? Put the cows in nappies? This is just part of life if you are this rural. I'm a bit confused as to how you are getting a stinky car inside and out. Surely it's just getting on the tyres and a bit of the bodywork, or are you tracking it inside on your shoes?

Oooooooooooooh · 30/11/2022 21:07

You did a lot of research , moved next to a dairy farm, want to speak to the farmer to resolve, it if not report a smell nuisance? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The white company may do some nice reed defusers hun
Nice try though
3/10

snazzlealpaca · 30/11/2022 21:07

You will get used to the smell pretty soon, it's just part of living in the countryside.

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/11/2022 21:08

🙄

MammaWeasel · 30/11/2022 21:08

This is so funny 🤣 😂 😆

SabbatWheel · 30/11/2022 21:10

You’re pretty brave posting about this OP, I fear you’re gonna get ripped to shreds.

Matilda1981 · 30/11/2022 21:10

This is the funniest post I’ve seen on here for ages!!

’we’ll speak to the farmer to resolve it’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

WindyHedges · 30/11/2022 21:10

Well, you said. You’re stupid. Townies often are ridiculously ignorant about the realities of rural life.

The farmer will laugh at you, and you’ll make yourself extremely unpopular in the neighbourhood if you even mention making an official complaint.

Good lord, where do you think your milk, butter, and cheese come from? Truly ignorant.

I suggest you move back to the suburbs.
