Smells from farm

DoAhhDiddy · 30/11/2022 20:53

Call me stupid but we bought a house a few months ago next to a dairy farm and the smell is horrific. I’d say 4 days out of a week it’s bad.

There is cow muck running down the lane into field next to our house, so we have to drive through it to get into our property and end up with stinky car inside and out.

We did lots of research before we bought, spoke with farmer, spoke with neighbour, drove past loads of times during all types of weather (mainly summer) as we had reservations about proximity to farm, but the smell wasn’t prevalent or close to the property. Maybe a little whiff down the Lane but nothing like this.

We expected a bit of a smell now and then, particularly when they are spreading and could put up with say 7 days out of the month it being a bit smelly, but not for the majority of the time.

Can we expect the smell to improve when the cows are put out to pasture in the spring? If we have to then we’ll speak with the farmer to resolve but if that doesn’t help, what constitutes a smell nuisance and who do you report to? I really don’t think I’m going to be able to settle here unless it gets better.

All advice welcome!

If you speak the farmer, please record it. It would be absolute gold on TikTok.

SpotifySpecific · 30/11/2022 21:11

You'll get used to it. I love the smell as it remind me of amazing long warm summers at my families farm as a child

greenacrylicpaint · 30/11/2022 21:13

well, in theory farmers are obliged (as is everyone else) to keep public roads clean or clean up after themselves.
are you on a public or private road?

but yes, farms smell. especially in winter. sorry.

CheapWine · 30/11/2022 21:13

I came straight to the replies! This has to be a joke, it’s commonly known that townies move to the country and complain about farm smells and not being able to get quinoa at the village shop.

I'm going to pretend this is a wind up.

mackthepony · 30/11/2022 21:13

How do you resolve cow shit?

Riverlee · 30/11/2022 21:14

Err, what do you expect the farmer to do?

You started the post by saying, Call:you stupid, so Stupid!

Cleanthatup · 30/11/2022 21:14

Omg this is going in classics!! 😂 😂

user764329056 · 30/11/2022 21:16

Please talk to farmer and let us know how he plans to resolve, I would pay good money to be at that interaction 🤣

Augustone · 30/11/2022 21:16

Yes, super idea. Just pop round to the farmer, knock-on the door and ask him/her to sort it out for you. Ludicrous that they should be allowed to continue with their livelihood when it causes you such inconvenience.

Oh wait... you bought a house next door to a farm .......

Rockingcloggs · 30/11/2022 21:17

😀😀😀 love this! We live next door to a dairy farm too! Your nostrils will get used to it eventually and you'll not be able to smell it unless you go on holiday for a bit and then return home! The farm was there before we were though so you know, it is what is!

QueenOfHiraeth · 30/11/2022 21:19

I would have thought this was a wind-up but FIL had a dairy farm and often got complaints from new residents of the cul-de-sac that backed onto his front field. The cows were too noisy, the muck-spreaders too smelly and the grass cutting caused too much dust and hayfever.
People don't understand what countryside is apart from looking pretty

mac1974 · 30/11/2022 21:19

I never knew farms smelt worse in winter than summer. I would have presumed the opposite??
Good luck Op. Following for the comments.

upfucked · 30/11/2022 21:04

This is like the people who move next to churches and complain about bell ringing or the coast and the fog horn.

Omg this was me. Bought a house in a Cathedral city and many a time came close to writing to the Council about the constant bell ringing.

OP I appreciate bell ringing is different to cow smells but I did eventually get used to the noise and it no longer wakes me.

MichelleScarn · 30/11/2022 21:21

Hey there farmer, what are you going to do to resolve the fact that a dairy farm smells of cow?! 😁😁
This can't be real!
Oo maybe he could tie magic trees to their tails?......

Ciri · 30/11/2022 21:21

Spenn · 30/11/2022 21:06

Is it a Bison farm?

Exactly what I thought. Definitely bison.

monsteronahill · 30/11/2022 21:22

I'm sorry OP you're going to get a bashing! Tbh why did you think a house by a farm would be a good idea?! It will smell a bit better when they're out to pasture, but the farmer can't really do anything to make it smell less in winter.

Are you friends with our neighbours who complained about harvesting crop ruining their relaxing Sunday as their visiting coeliac grandchild had to go and sit inside? 😂 apparently the air pollution was a cause for a riot!

Hawkins001 · 30/11/2022 21:23

@DoAhhDiddy

I Understand your perspectives op, but you knew it was a farm, and the farm has animals,

tilder · 30/11/2022 21:25

You're getting a hard time here op.

Cows smell. I know a lot of dairy farms and they all have a whiff but only 1 really smells. Manure running down the road isn't ideal either. I can understand a spill, but there are rules about manure. Partly to protect water courses, partly road safety.

But then again if the poo on the road is where the herd cross for milking...

So it may be totally normal for a dairy farm. Or could be bad practice. Difficult to know. Complaining is hard and makes you no friends.

I totally agree in the flies💩

BrutusMcDogface · 30/11/2022 21:26

“How do you resolve cow shit?”

😂😂😂

JaffavsCookie · 30/11/2022 21:26

Ha ha ha
buys house next to farm then complains about the smells.
you do know the animals may also be fucking ( though probs not if dairy, usually ai there) scratch their arses and fart as well.
move back to the city dear.

UrsulaPandress · 30/11/2022 21:28

Thank you OP

Cheered me right up.

Do let us know how you get on when you speak to the farmer.

DemBonesDemBones · 30/11/2022 21:29

This has to be a piss take?!

GuyFawkesDay · 30/11/2022 21:30

Hahahahaha are you for real?

You bought a house next to a dairy farm. Course it's going to smell a fair chunk of the time! And no, you can't complain because you bought the house next to an existing farm.

Get used to it or move. If you complain you are going to be "that person" aka the village idiot the rest of your residency there.

What an utterly entitled and foolish person. The countryside is a working environment.

Croftboft · 30/11/2022 21:30

You bought a house next to a farm and are now surprised it smells.
The way to resolve this is for you to move. But I'm guessing this is a joke post.

ODFOx · 30/11/2022 21:30

OP, caveats re living next to a farm etc etc.
How large is the herd? There should not be slurry running down the Lane. Are the slurry pits overflowing because of the rain recently or is there a problem?
Unless it's a really small herd there should be remediation in place. You can't have slurry running down roadways or into watercourses.
If it's just muck from walking the herd up the lane then that is fair enough, but you said running, which suggests a slurry issue.
Check out the DEFRA guidance.
