Literally zero mobile reception with any provider. Will a boost box work?

There doesn’t appear to any service whatsoever, on any network. The Ofcom checker states the same.

Although we’ll have Wi-Fi, some level of mobile service is required for 2FA for logging into some work things. These are text, not data, messages.

I read that O2’s boost box “works by connecting to a router and sending traffic over the broadband network to increase mobile signal.” But if there is no signal there to start with, will it do anything?!

Anyone have any experience of this and found a way to receive text messages at least?

We have poor mobile coverage and we use a provider that gives WiFi calling. It means our mobiles just use the home WiFi for calling on our mobiles/sending and receiving texts. As long as your phone is reasonably new it should be able to do this.

We were in a similar situation, although not that rural. We moved to EE as they offer Wifi Calling meaning you can get calls and texts over wifi. There are other providers that offer the same service, we tried Three initially but their customer service was awful.

Not sure I explained that very well - I this might help: www.4g.co.uk/news/ee-o2-three-and-vodafone-which-networks-offer-wi-fi-calling/

You can check if your device(s) can accept wifi calling here: deviceguides.ee.co.uk/?topic=turning-wi-fi-calling-on-or-off

@Reallybadidea I use WiFi calling where I live right now because signal isn’t great, but I thought standard texts still couldn’t be sent/ received. If I’m wrong about that then I will be so happy!

@pyewatchet My device definitely can but I didn’t realise it meant that standard texts would be received! I thought it literally just mean “calling”! This is such amazing news!

Yes, WiFi calling does texts too!

pyewatchet · 23/07/2022 19:02

Yes, absolutely! No more hanging out of an upstairs window to get enough signal for a 2FA text!

@Reallybadidea @pyewatchet I could cry with happiness right now 😂 One less thing to worry about as I plan for the big move! Thank you both. ☺️
