Does anyone live here or roundabouts with a young family? What's it like? Lots to do? Maybe moving after being in a city all our lives.

It is beautiful with a slightly older demograpic. Train takes you direct to lancaster which is a fab city and you are also near the lakes .

Footle · 30/07/2022 21:02

@whimsicalwillow , that will be one hell of a culture shock.

Digestive28 · 30/07/2022 21:08

It’s lovely but complete opposite to city life and the convenience that brings. So if prepared for rural life and all that brings then do it - it is beautiful, more older people than young but there are enough young families about. Arnside is similar (opposite side of the bay)

Digestive28 · 30/07/2022 21:09

There is lots to do but mostly that is walking/swimming in lakes etc. nearest place for things like a trampoline park or similar is at least an hours drive away

whimsicalwillow · 30/07/2022 23:50

Thanks for the comments.
We've been visiting Grange for over 30 years. Still stay there every year. Hoping to move there with daughter, son in law and granddaughter.
We're all ready to make the move but was just interested if anyone lived thereabouts who could comment on toddler groups, nursery etc

@whimsicalwillow hi just wondered if you’d made the move at all?

rwalker · 27/03/2024 16:33

Have you considered ulverston more going on there

lingmerth · 27/03/2024 16:50

@QueenOfTheSouthh
We are moving in July/August. Have just sold our house and watching Rightmove religiously for houses in Grange and Allithwaite. Not much coming to the market at the moment. 🤞it picks up soon!
Thanks for asking.💐

lingmerth · 27/03/2024 16:53

@rwalker we want to move to Grange-over-Sands or Allithwaite. Our granddaughter has just got a place at a local school for September and we provide some childcare. Thank you for posting though🙂

QueenOfTheSouthh · 06/05/2024 14:06

@lingmerth is it good for families and plenty to do for kids? As I have a 19 month old little boy.

lingmerth · 06/05/2024 18:50

@QueenOfTheSouthh we're moving this Summer! Quite a few play areas in Grange and Allithwaite and Cartmel. Not sure about toddler groups etc as our granddaughter will be starting nursery so won't need them. Softplay etc is in Kendal.

QueenOfTheSouthh · 14/05/2024 21:24

@lingmerth Oh that’s brill that you managed to find somewhere. Sounds great and the surrounding areas. Ive got family in Morecambe also so we are really considering the move in the next year from Manchester. Where are you moving from?

lingmerth · 14/05/2024 21:42

@QueenOfTheSouthh were moving from Birmingham.
Still haven't found anywhere to live! House we were buying was taken off the market by the vendors. They changed their mind!😡
We're now looking to rent and then buy once we're living there.
It's a wonderful area but it's blooming stressful trying to get there!
Good luck with your move🤞

somewhereovertherain · 28/05/2024 11:26

We lived in Allithwaite for 20+ years now moved to Milnthorpe.

Plenty for families to do, there are some good preschools and mums & tots groups in Grange / Cartmel.

Loved the area, our DDs thrived at the local primaries and then through Cartmel.

Still have family in Allithwate and Kents Bank

lingmerth · 28/05/2024 23:31

@somewhereovertherain we've found a house In Allithwaite! The move is real now. It's a place very close to my heart. Grange is just down the road. Can't wait to move now!
Granddaughter will be going to the local school. Whenever we visit there's always lots of different events on that she enjoys.
Here's hoping the lido dream becomes a reality!

It's a great village and so glad there's a shop again now after the idiots closed the shop/post office.

the lido will happen - been involved with save grange lido in the past.....

@somewhereovertherain popped into the shop last time we were there. It's very well stocked, good use of space and was very busy when I was there. Allithwaite's been crying out for it.

It would be wonderful if the lido could be fully restored. I joined the campaign too, just really paying a subscription monthly and buying the odd thing. Needs a wealthy benefactor to leave a huge donation in their will!

Good to hear your opinion on the schools. Is there a reason why there's no 6th form at Cartmel's secondary school?

Just the pure size of the school there is only around 250 pupils in the priory school. Cracking school though

lots go to either Ulverston or Dallam

I live in allithwaite. My dd is in the primary… it’s a lovely little school. So much so that kids from other villages go there.

My ds is in Cartmel secondary. Again a great school, if a little old fashioned. But not a big deal. Kids can’t get away with anything as it’s close knit. Small gcse classes too.

My ds will likely go to Ulverston for 6th form which is easy enough on the train. But there’s colleges dotted about too… because the whole year will be doing it, it means they’re not alone.

Lancaster’s 25 mins away on train, but only 45 in car.

Fellfoot on windermere is only 15 mins drive away. Conistion 40. Eskdale an hour. Hampsfell and Cartmel fell are lovely for walking.

We spend a lot of time in the lakes.

@oObyeOo thanks for your message. This move is proving so stressful. Lost our buyers in June but have just accepted an offer, and the house we were buying in Allithwaite we have offered on again and it's been accepted.
It's good to hear about the primary school. Our dgd will be starting nursery in September and I'll be doing drop offs and pick ups several days a week.
Maybe I'll meet you at the school gates!

I don’t do the school run unfortunately, my dh does. But there’s lots of friendly parents there… non of the clicky stuff you see on here sometimes. The play park is right next door so many of the kids go there after school with parents and it feels like a real community. 😊

lingmerth · 05/08/2024 23:16

Good to hear. Hoping to make friends this way. Any grandparents at the school gate?😀
