Does anyone have any views on places to live in North Somerset? Ideally village/ small town within 40 minute drive of Bristol. Good primary school important. Thanks

Cheddar?

WakeUpLockie · 28/12/2021 20:29

Ched is first/middle/high but good schools. Amenities. Countryside. Close to wells and Bristol.

Thanks - will have another look at Cheddar - is it very touristy? Was wondering about Axbridge? Or Chew Magna. Or Clevedon/ Portishead.

Portishead is lovely but larger than most the places you mention. Also more expensive than other costal towns due to proximity to Bristol. We live by the beach

Also we have half decent buses, and railway is being built

purplejungle · 28/12/2021 20:51

Great that's really good to know - thanks!

Axbridge basically is cheddar imo. Same schools. I would not live in axbridge personally, it’s very claustrophobic. Cheddar is only really touristy in the gorge, which is a very easy road to avoid.

Plenty of nice villages in the Cheddar area. Rooksbridge, Brent Knoll and East Brent have good motorway access and are closer to trains.
Mark and Wedmore are also nice. I like the whole area and the schools are generally very good.

Thank you this is all super helpful. Those who know Clevedon/ Portishead and Cheddar/ surrounding villages - how would you choose between them?

Best thing I ever did moving to Somerset in 2019. I was so miserable in the south east.
People here are so friendly and the pace of life is so much slower. I live in Somerton which is nice.
Castle Cary has a trasin station directly to London and is a nice little town, Somerton is great, Axbridge, Cheddar, Wedmore, Bruton, all lovely.
Have you been up to have a look around?

purplejungle · 28/12/2021 21:37

Yes have been for day trips and don't live that far away now (in Wiltshire), but so hard to make such a big decision ! Have got a trip to Clevedon booked and from this post think will also book a weekend in Cheddar and explore all around to try to decide.

I used to work in Nailsea (and still have friends who live there). I can't say what the schools are like but it's a medium size town with most of what you need from day to day.
It also has good bus and rail links and is only 15 minutes to the airport.
