Dunoon relocation

Hi, does anyone live in Dunoon, Scotland? We are thinking of relocating there from Brighton and wondered what it’s like for families. We have an older child in secondary school and two in primary. We would know know thoughts about job opportunities, tourist trade etc.
Thanks!

You’d probably be better off asking Mn to move this to Scotsnet. Smile

I don't know it too well, but I think it would definitely be a bit of a culture shock after Brighton.

Aaah ok thank you!

Ok is life a little too slow there?

Have a friend from there. Unless teens are into boat based sports it's very limiting - have to get a boat to go shopping properly...

Ok to get to Glasgow by boat/train.

Strong west of Scotland accent - might affect understanding until they tune in, depending on age. My friend tones his accent down for English people in our shared sport.

DeliaDinglehopper · 09/11/2021 14:09

Have you ever been there?

randomsabreuse · 09/11/2021 14:11

By car it's VERY isolated, especially in bad weather because the road is even less reliable than the ferries in wet and windy weather (Rest and Be Thankful Road). Generally closed for several weeks a year with rockfalls and landslides.

Can you explain a bit more about why you want to move there? It seems like a very random location.

outdooryone · 03/12/2021 15:41

I too would echo that is an odd place to decide to move too - have you visited or spent time there?

It’s not very cosmopolitan compared to Brighton. Chi chi cafes and gastro pubs have passed it by. It’s isolated by road as other posters have said. You’ll be dependent on ferries - reliability is a hot issue in Scotland at the moment - and weather to go anywhere. Make sure you visit the town in January to get a proper feel for out of season living. Curious why you would choose to relocate there.

I'm curious too Grin
There are many beautiful, scenic and coastal areas to choose that are not as difficult to access.
Remote doesn't always equal a bitch to get to but in the case of Dunoon it does!
Have you ever visited? Or spoken to anyone who has?
We live "remote and rural", further north and better scenery with no ferries involved!
