Help with ideas for Oxfordshire towns

Hi everyone

I’m hoping for some help with a potential family move to Oxford from London.

We have three kids, ages 1, 4 and 6 and so schools (state) are a huge priority.

My family are in Woodstock, but they moved there after I left home and so I only know that specific area to visit. I don’t want to raise hopes by discussing this with them - hence I’m asking here!

We’re looking for a four bedroom detached period property - budget of £1-1.25.

I’m going to need to be able to get to Hammersmith twice a week by either driving or train.

We live in a really run down area of London, but the community is fantastic and we’re very close with our NCT friends, neighbours and school parents. I am sorry to be thinking of leaving but my husband is clearly depressed here and every time there’s local violence it really affects him. He’s absolutely desperate for a move to the country.

We’d like to live close to Oxford so that as the kids grow up they can get either the bus or train independently to the city.

After living in such a hole for so long I’d love to live somewhere attractive with a great community we can hopefully be a part of. I really enjoy getting the kids involved in clubs, fêtes etc. Woodstock would have been perfect for us I guess but we don’t want to live on my parents’ doorstep :)

Any ideas for somewhere similar would be much appreciated.

Thanking you!

Ps. I’m also keen on looking at Surrey but my husband needs work coming round to that idea :)

Woodstock was top of our list and we have ended up purchasing in nearby Charlbury. A lovely little town with a great sense on community Smile

Ah thank you for your reply - much appreciated. I will go exploring :)

Charlbury and Hanborough both have regular train services to Paddington, so I would be looking in those areas if you're going to be commuting into London regularly.

Thanks! I’ve got them both on my short list :)

Why not Oxford? It always comes up on threads asking for places like London but not London.

If you want a detached period property, you would probably need to be in one of the old villages on the outskirts or compromise with a semi-detached house.

Islip if you can afford it - trains to London, Oxford and Bicester for kids stuff - nice little primary school.

Ah I didn’t realise there were villages quite so close to Oxford. We would definitely be happy with this set up. That house in Cumnor looks fantastic. Thank you so much!

I have not heard of Islip before. Thank you - I will check it out now.

Would suggest also look around pangboune, goring and streatley. Excellent train connection and lovely village feel
