Google National Crime stats
Put in a postcode
It shows you all crimes reported by the police per month

Hiya, I live near Matlock. Wirksworth is lovely and full of independent shops. There is an independent cinema, chocolate makers and brewery. They have a festival every year too which is lovely. Schools are lovely and a few secondary schools to choose from, including one in wirksworth and one in Matlock. Any other questions I’m happy to help 😊

Lovely area. Touristy, of course, so lots of visitors and the inconveniences that comes with living in a tourist area, so you need to balance that against the benefits etc.

LolaDarkdestroyer · 24/05/2020 15:25

Thank you and yes I've googled crime rates etc but it didn't show much...maybe a good thing!

Beeinthecountry would you say the way of life is different round there? I live in the east miss already semi rural but obviously a city I just want a better way of life for my kids and and an opportunity has come up to live there, I just worry about all the usual things drugs etc as there is a heavy presence around where I live and I have a vulnerable teenager .

What I would say is wirksworth is still a town so there’s the good and less good areas like any other town (or though from experience it’s nothing compared to some towns!), have you considered bonsall / lea / crich / Darley dale / Wessington or other villages at all? They’re very village-y with easy access to wirksworth / Matlock and have more of that country village lifestyle. The way of life is very different to city though even in wirksworth itself, much slower paced. I am bias towards the area as I absolutely love it- easy to get to derby / Sheffield / Nottingham / Manchester, loads of walks, picturesque and I’m never short of things to do haha

LolaDarkdestroyer · 24/05/2020 17:56

Beeinthecountry thanks, wirksworth is the only option do you know gorsey bank? That area

Hi Lola, did you ever end up moving to Wirksworth? If so, how are you finding it? We're thinking of moving to the area, but it seems most of the housing is in Middleton-by-Wirksworth. We had a visit and it's nice, but no shop and wondering if it is doomed to just being a community of holiday homes. Any insider info most welcome!!

Derbyshire is great, lots of greenery, wildlife etc, but there are small pockets of deprivation with the usual problems that brings e.g. bits of Alfreton, some former mining towns, inner city Derby etc.

Wirksworth is considered quite desirable, lots of 'arty' people, coffee shops etc, but again there are a few dodgy places, best to visit for a few days if possible to get an idea.

The drugs thing is under control and the local police are very good and very tough, the 'county lines' bs from Derby/Sheff/Manc have tried to get a foothold here but have mostly been seen off pretty effectively, which is brilliant news.

Kids can get weed easily enough here if they know where to go, but equally they can easily avoid it if they wish. Luckily, for harder stuff you'd really have to go to a big city, and long may it remain so.

People here are warm but honest, and the culture is quite traditional. I'd say it's one of the safest places in England to bring up kids, hope that helps.

I have nothing useful to add to the thread, other than I love Derbyshire, but I just find it hilarious to see Kirk Ireton referred to as posh! My father's family came from there and posh is most definitely not a word I'd use to describe any of them.... oh how times change Grin

@hr276 did you come to wirksworth in the end?
