Best places to live in UK

We're considering relocation. Won't be for a good couple of years yet, but we would like to start holidaying in various locations throughout the UK to get a feel for different areas.

We want a pretty country setting but not too far from a city/large town. Good education prospects for kids are also necessary. Unfortunately, we won't have a huge budget so we can't really afford Bath for instance (unless anyone knows of any affordable hidden gems nearby!). Ideally somewhere with a strong trade scene for my husband. I can pretty much do anything.

Any suggestions? =)

Have a look round Worcestershire - lots of nice places, not far from various cities/large towns, and south Worcs is very reasonably priced

Worcestershire is nice and is near to the, much more beautiful but remote, county of Herefordshire. Two good indies in Worcester itself.

Some lovely places in south nottinghamshire and if you get close to West Bridgford, their schools are amazing if you can get in. Possibly not if you live in a village though!

Gloucestershire

Herefordshire or Monmouthshire. Very beautiful, Hereford is a small city but also got Cardiff and Bristol in striking distance. Good state and private schooling options. (Obviously pick your area!) And your money goes a long way.

Herefordshire or Shropshire

Not here - best countryside, awesome schools close to decent town and city but also the edge of two national parks.
