Why are the owls going nuts?

We quite often hear owls at night. But tonight they are in overdrive. Hooting constantly. I quite like it but I wonder what’s going on? They’re kind of talking to each other. Why this mad frenzy of owl socialising?

What kind of owls?
We have tawny owls living in the end of the garden and I hear them a lot but no more now than any other time.

TheBigBallOfOil · 13/09/2019 21:22

Ooh I don’t know what kind. Hooty ones. They are going crazy right now. Very atmospheric

Full moon tomorrow

BikeRunSki · 13/09/2019 21:23

Full moon innit.

Trewser · 13/09/2019 21:23

Full moon. Have you not looked outside? It's lovely

TheBigBallOfOil · 13/09/2019 21:24

Yes indeed. Why does that make them hoot lots? Do they like to party when the moon is full?

We have a pair of tawnys living behind us and they have nights of going mad. Quite often it's the male and female shouting at each other (they make a different noise from each other- one 'twits' and one 'twoos') but we've had it this year as well when they had chicks fledging - a whole few evenings of crazy hooting Grin
They sound wonderful though so they're forgiven their shouting.

TheBigBallOfOil · 13/09/2019 21:26

They are having a hootenanny!!
Tee hee etc

Aah I will wait for ours to start when we go up to bed.
Anyone any idea what kind of owl makes a shriek noise? It frightens the bloody life out of me!!

chesterdraws1 · 13/09/2019 21:35

Ours are driving me crackers. And the wood pigeons who keep trying to build nests inside my open bedroom window.

troppibambini · 13/09/2019 21:39

I just googled owl noises and it seems it's a barn owl. Noisy bugger!!

TheBigBallOfOil · 13/09/2019 21:40

I might go out for a walk and see if I can spot some owlies.
DH got dive bombed by one once. Scary.

It's a parliament of owls isnt it? So they are our new government

TheBigBallOfOil · 13/09/2019 21:47

Is the male/female noise thing why people say 'swit swoo' when soneone looks sexy? Did it come from owl flirting?

Is a wolf whistle actually a total misnomer and it should be called an owl howl?

Scruffalicious · 13/09/2019 21:48

Sorry... I've had a GnT...

Gatekeeper · 01/10/2019 12:49

they are establishing their territory again this time of year hence lots more owly business. We have woods at the end of our garden but they like to sit on top of our chimney and hoot down it

MoobaaMoobaa · 01/10/2019 13:03

yeah ours were particularly noisey the other week, I think a younger owl was trying to set up residence, as it's screechy hoot sounded higher pitched than the others and first time I've heard it too.

MelanieFrontage · 16/10/2019 00:11

Our local owls are going nuts this evening, I’ve just let the dogs out for their last wee and it’s very noisy out there! Absolutely lovely but I’m glad that I’m not camping, would never get to sleep 😂
