Owls vs. poison for keeping down rodent population....

We live in an old cottage by a river and, as you'd expect, have to contend with a fair number of mice and (yuk) rats. Our pest control guy keeps them under control with vast quantities of poison, but I was wondering about getting some owls and ditching the poison. Gather owls are happy to live in close proximity so could get quite a few owl boxes. Clearly a more environmentally sustainable way to deal with things (and avoids nasty poisons entering the food chain etc.) but would it WORK well enough?

Erradirat + owl boxes could be the ideal solution
